The Lions are pleased to announce Kaya Malotana as their newly appointed Development Officer. Malotana joined the Lions on Monday, 19 February 2007 after moving from Potchefstroom for a job opportunity at the SABC.

He soon became the Club Manager of the Soweto Rugby Club after his move. While in Potchefstroom, Malotana was in charge of the development programme at the PUK institute where he started in 2003.

Malotana has been involved in rugby on many levels ranging from playing to coaching and management to development. He played provincial rugby at Border from 1996 – 1999 before he moved to the Golden Lions and played Currie Cup and Super 12 for the Cats in 2000. He further made a name for himself in rugby when he played SA U/19 and SA U/21 rugby before joining the emerging Springboks where he played a warm up match against the British Lions.

Malotana went on to join the Springboks in 1999 when he was included the squad for the Tri-Nations tour to Australia and New Zealand. He received his first Test cap in the 1999 World Cup match against Spain.

The Lions Development Programme has been put in place to accommodate and teach any communities that have never had the opportunity to play rugby how to go about playing the game and getting involved in it. It is not a programme designed for specific races or genders, but for everyone – male and female and from any racial group.

The Lions made the decision to hire Malotana because of his excellent profile. He has been through the ranks in rugby and has made it on merit. Malotana is a produce of the first development programme by SARU in 1995.

“The reasons we focused on Kaya is because he knows what it takes to get any youngster to come from grassroots to professional level. The Union see Soweto Rugby Club as a major development project and we want to see if we can make an improvement and assist them in any way. We will use Kaya, especially at the Soweto Rugby Club, and in conjunction with Soweto to see what talent we can get from the area as we are certain there is plenty of talent in Soweto?, Wynand Moolman, the Manager of Club Rugby said.

“Kaya is also an excellent choice as he speaks English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu and Tswana, so he will be able to coach and communicate with the children in their mother tongue, which will eliminate any miscommunications and misunderstandings. We are very proud to have someone of Kaya’s caliber here?, Moolman continued.

Malotana is excited about the challenge ahead of him and is hoping to improve the system of development in all areas, but especially in Soweto. “I can see a lot of development has already taken place amongst the administration and coaches. I honestly believe if we can get them to a high standard of administration and coaching, we have better opportunities to identify and find talent.

We must remember that rugby is competing with soccer in Soweto, and as such it is going to be a huge challenge. An integral part of development is to be innovative in the way you think and the way you do things?, Malotana said.

He continued by saying that, “The greatest reward or gratification that I can hope to achieve is to find one youngster in Soweto who comes through the ranks and becomes the flagship of the Union?.

“We are very honored to have Kaya as the newest member to the Lions family, and we look forward to many exciting developments from him?, Moolman concluded.
