Lions rugby administrators are furious at new Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus for apparently going behind their backs to secure the services of Brian Mujati.
Hennie Brandt and De Jongh Borchardt from the Beeld reports that Lions administrators have already contacted SARU’s Johan Prinsloo to stop attempts by Erasmus in securing the services of the fiery Lions tighthead prop – which they claim is done without the consent of the Lions Rugby Union.
“We have a problem with Erasmus talking to Mujati behind our backs,” Golden Lions Rugby Union president Jannie Ferreira said on Wednesday.
“We have already made contact with Johan Prinsloo (chief executive of the SA Rugby Union) because Erasmus is personally negotiating with Mujati.”
The Lions will do everything possible to retain the front ranker’s services, even though his agent feels there are loopholes that could enable him to get out of his contract with the union. The contract expires at the end of 2008.
The row comes shortly after reports that Cheetahs prop Jannie du Plessis has decided not to move to Cape Town but to join the Sharks in Durban.
It was a matter of blood being thicker than water when the Springbok signed for the Sharks. His brother, Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis, is already a member of the Sharks front row.
Jannie will move to the coast after this year’s Currie Cup season. The Sharks will need him because they are losing Springbok captain John Smit, who will start playing in France after the World Cup tournament.
This major loss, as well as a lack of depth among the prop forwards, motivated the Sharks to sign the other Du Plessis as well.
The union’s contract with Springbok prop BJ Botha, who can be employed at hooker in an emergency, expires at the end of next season.
There is great interest in Botha in the northern hemisphere, particularly among clubs in France, where good tighthead props are treated as if they were rock stars.
Hendrik Cronje reports from Bloemfontein that Springbok flank Juan Smith won’t be leaving the Cheetahs to join the Sharks.
Smith and Springbok prop CJ van der Linde, who has been considering offers from French clubs, will remain with the Free State side until at least the end of next year.

OO will be happy.
Perhaps we should turn out attention to someone like Baywatch Grobbelaar, unsung hero.
August 9th, 2007 at 10:57 am
Good I was awaitng this thread.
Rassie is under pressure to get good forwards.
Everything needs to be done to keep our players now if we’re serious about wanting to win the super14 and currie cup next year.
August 9th, 2007 at 10:59 am
Rassie gaan homself baie ongewild maak op hierdie manier.
Onthou jy is n klein vissie in groot dam Rassie…..
Die groot visse sal jou rug breek.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:00 am
Isn’t this type of approach called “tapping-up” in roundball? A la Cashley Cole & Chelsea?
August 9th, 2007 at 11:03 am
I just find it rich Lions bitching about this if you consider how they aquired the Rose brothers…
It was not really open across the table negotiations now was it?
August 9th, 2007 at 11:05 am
True, PA. But I think the Lions are trying to forget all about the throny Rose brothers.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Let Luke go.
Half the problem solved at WP.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:09 am
PA
Ridding WP of the Rose brothers
turns out to be a very big favour
by the Lions.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:14 am
No question Boertjie.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:23 am
Nou moet transvaal net ook die Truidief koop en dan kan dit net beter gaan met die WP….
August 9th, 2007 at 11:28 am
No need to go after baywatch, afterall Jaques Botes was the best player ever, according to the vast majority of Sharkies
August 9th, 2007 at 11:30 am
For sure I am happy- but the idea is not to have primadonnas at an exorbant price that believes they should be somewhere else.
I still believe most Cheetahs that have outvalued themselves by becomming beTTer than the Outcak can aFFord will rather go to France.
TraveLLing iside SA as a Pro is rather like changing deck chairs on the Titanic.

as long as the salary keeps moving up, dude. It’s a lot more expensive to live in Europe, as I am rapidly discovering.

I have seen some of the salaries Rob- I think it applicable for the okes!
August 9th, 2007 at 11:41 am
you’re making an absolute statement about something that’s not that clear cut. Why is Jannie moving to the Sharks and not France? You already imply that he is only doing it for money, so why settle for a paltry R1200000 when he could get a lot more in €?
August 9th, 2007 at 11:43 am
The professional game in Upington is better than in Edeben….
August 9th, 2007 at 11:45 am
Couldnt it be a case of losing his license if he does not practice perhaps?
I know a doctor told me theyhave to attend so many seminars and lectures and shit and also do some work as a doctor to keep their license – can Jannie do that in France?
August 9th, 2007 at 11:48 am
Because Jannie & his boet want to play together- and Bismarck have a contract still.
Its also close enough to the farm(s).
Tswane is also close enough to the farms.
Face it rob- be best quality players will not be attracted only to the $hark$ in future by virtue of money alone- as France is a better option.
revisit your own reasons for resettling.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:50 am
BTW ROB
Dr Du Plessis cannot practise as yet
Still have to do a Zuma year- as as Bismarck hads said on TV- Medcine is a gOOde “qualification” to go farming
August 9th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Anyway- it seems that I have a castle to build!
Cheers

Agree – as long as money is the only thing they are after. Your aSSumption is that money is the only reason why people would play for the Sharks. It suits your agenda, but nevertheless is blatantly wrong and I think both of us know that.
Still, it helps you entrench the persona you play here on RW, so we’ll let it pass.
August 9th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
reckon Mujati is excellent and highly underrated. Its not just Heinke, this guy is very good. If transformation crap goes forward, will be invaluable.
Rassie is a very shrewd operator, but Loffie must be pissed. dont want to lose this guy, lions are developning nicely.

you would have to say though, that its a bit of a crime that the sharks did not win the S14 last year. hell it was done and dusted.
August 9th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Stan – do we really need to attack your statement about all the Bulls okes being homegrown AGAIN? Jeepers, it’s like you guys just can’t tune to another channel.

Die verskil is dat julle koop.
In ons geval is dit dat die spelers smeek ons om vir ons te kom speel!

Mbeki het nog net een keer in
sy lewe die guts gehad om ‘n
minister te fire –
en toe fire hy die verkeerde een!
August 9th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Attack is not a word to by used by Natal supporters.
Attack is the same as trophy, cup, winning etc….
You should use words like contest, reply, try to compete, 79 minutes etc……oh, and choke.
August 9th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
what happened, Boertjie?
August 9th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

“The dismissal took effect immediately yesterday and followed leaks to the media that Madlala-Routledge had undertaken an unauthorised trip to Spain, with her son and a consultant, at a cost of R160 000.”

No, the money is just an excuse Gert. They all do it and he is the biggest culprit of all the snoobab.
He fired her because she declared the hospital as an emergency and disagree with him on the Aids issue.
August 9th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Various reasons for her dismissal have circulated.
These included an unannounced visit she made to Mount Frere hospital, which she declared to be in a state of “national emergency”
There had also been a R160 000 trip to Spain to attend an Aids conference – which Mbeki apparently withdrew his permission for at the last minute.
Madlala-Routledge was also apparently involved in ongoing clashes with health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang over government’s Aids policy.
August 9th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
Hoe bedoel jy nou Redj?
August 9th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Strange how Mbeki is being loyal
to the biggest embarrasment ever
to have served in a SA cabinet –
and there were and are plenty.
En Eendrag koshuis op Stalinbosch
het afgebrand.

Would be sorry to lose Mujati, but on the other hand how would the rest of us feel if our prospetive employers had to approach our current employers first if they wanted to offer us a job?
August 9th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Praat van kultuur:
“South Africa is full of wonders that defy description. Take the political career of Jacob Zuma. The man is the original boomerang with more lives than a cat. Only Mr Zuma could come out of a rape trial with more supporters than ever, a hit song and a new lease on life.”

The sharks coaching setup is amongst the best in the world – One of the reasons youngsters come to the coast – Plumbtree with a bunch of greenhorns isnt doing a shabby job in the currie cup
August 10th, 2007 at 11:22 am
Jannie will move to the coast after this year’s Currie Cup season. The Sharks will need him because they are losing Springbok captain John Smit, who will start playing in France after the World Cup tournament.
Anyone else think this makes no sense whatsoever?
Baywatch woukld be better off with the Sharks or WP at this stage because at least there someone will see he’s the best openside flank in the country by a proverbial country mile
August 10th, 2007 at 11:28 am
Lions backthree , Alberts, Joubert & Baywatch is the best in the CC DavidS
August 10th, 2007 at 11:40 am
…and its funny how the majority of the players that come to Durban to play rugby spend the rest of their lives here……
August 10th, 2007 at 11:48 am
sheesh, lets hope whoever goes down to Durban doesn’t take a needle with him, he might find it very difficult to move around without popping a couple of big heads by accident, mostly in the stands…
August 10th, 2007 at 11:51 am
I didn’t know you were in Durban dummykick…we will try to be careful with your head
