The series is sealed but the battle is far from over.
Rugby365
After a week of high drama we finally get down to some serious rugby – with South Africa facing the British and Irish Lions in the third and final Test in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The off-field drama was probably not the way the coaches wanted to spice up the final match of the tour, but it certainly ensured that the stakes were raised.
As Lions coach Ian McGeechan said: “It is a new Test match in many respects.”
Yes, both teams are showing significant changes from last week’s brutal battle in Pretoria – the Boks have 10 changes and the Lions eight.
But it is the ‘he said, she said, no he didn’t’ media spat that grabbed the headlines and overshadowed the build-up in what has been a very intriguing series.
Changes aside, there is plenty to play for, for both teams.
The Springboks are targeting an elusive series whitewash over the Lions and the tourists are hoping to get a win that will “prove” they were indeed unlucky in the first two Tests.
As the Lions coach, McGeechan, and his team, told us ad nauseam this past week, they are very keen to finish on a win. We also had to listen to the “we could have sat here with two wins” refrain .
But, as they begrudgingly acknowledged, the Boks have already won the series.
While both coaches also hauled out the usual cliches – the “lot of plusses” they will take from the previous games – all that matters now is what they will produce during Saturday’s 80 minutes of action.
The Lions truly believe they have a winning recipe, even though they have yet to see any dividends for the faith they have shown in McGeechan’s master plan.
But they are not about to deviate from what they believe in.
“We certainly won’t give up on the way we’ve been playing,” McGeechan said, adding: “If we get it right we will be in there with a shot of winning.”
The numerous changes do mean, as McGeechan said, that this is a new Test in many respects.
“The players out there will be wanting to respond very positively,” he said about the change and team he will be fielding on Saturday.
Regardless of the series loss, McGeechan feels that a win in any form on Saturday will be a “very sweet” victory.
He also knows that his team did fall short in certain areas in the first two outings.
“I think defensively we need to do a bit more,” he said about the Boks’ five tries to four in the first two Tests.
“We are very focussed on playing the best rugby we can and hopefully producing another good Test match at the weekend.”
One of the reasons why the Boks have managed to outscore the Lions is their ability to get over the advantage line from set pieces.
“South Africa do have very good first phase attack,” the Lions mentor said.
McGeechan, who described South Africa as probably the best side in the world at the moment, was at pains to stress that his team’s tackling will have to be out of the top drawer.
“South Africa deserves a lot of credit, their finishing has been top class and their defence has been top class too,” he said of the Boks.
However, he promised that his team will be “up for the third Test”.
“The word to describe how the players approach it [the game] is ‘keen’. The guys are keen to show what the Lions are about.”
Bok coach Peter de Villiers, who said he wants to inject “new energy” into his team with the 10 changes, is looking to carry the momentum from the first two Test wins into Saturday’s game and through into the Tri-Natons.
He echoed similar sentiments as McGeechan about where the Boks’ strength is.
“If we can set up good first-phase ball, we will play like we always wanted to play … play the situation,” De Villiers said, when quizzed about his team’s tactics.
“There will be kicks, there will be rucks and we’ll play the situation. The only thing I do hope is that they [the players] will make good decisions on the field”
De Villiers also said his team won’t change their game plan, despite the numerous changes.
“When you change personnel there will always be areas you focus on more than others, but the general game plan will always be the same,” the Bok mentor said.
He said that when he named his original 28-man squad, before the tour, he selected it with a specific game plan in mind.
“These players compliment each other,” De Villiers added.
Players to watch:
For South Africa: In any team that shows 10 changes you will have many new faces to look at. However, critics begged the Bok coach, De Villiers, to name fullback Zane Kirchner, outside centre Jaque Fourie, inside centre Wynand Olivier and flyhalf Morné Steyn in his starting backline. They now have their wish and it’s up to these players to show they deserve to be there. Up front players like No.8 Ryan Kankowski, openside flank Heinrich Brüssow and hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle deserve more than just a cursory glance.
For the British and Irish Lions: Much was made of right wing Ugo Monye before the first Test, when he squandered two clear-cut scoring chances. He gets a chance to make amends. The new centre combinations of Tommy Bowe and Riki Flutey, while left wing Shane Williams also finally gets a run in the starting XV. Veteran Martyn Williams would like to show he deserved his call-up earlier, while the spotlight is likely to shine brightly on the front row of Phil Vickery, Matthew Rees and Andrew Sheridan.
Head to head: You won’t look any further than the front row for the Tendai Mtawarira (South Africa) versus Phil Vickery (Lions) rematch. It will be the most anticipated encounter in weeks. After Mtawarira’s demolition job in the first Test, Vickery will have a big score to settle. The flyhalf battle could also be intriguing, with Morné Steyn (South Africa) getting to prove his worth against one of the best in Stephen Jones (Lions). The breakdown will be another key aspect and here we have Heinrich Brüssow (South Africa) up against two Lions fetchers in Martyn Williams and Joe Worsley.

rugby365 Prediction: Both teams have showed great commitment throughout the series and it is unlikely to change on Saturday. Once you compare the two teams man-for-man, then you start getting the feeling that just maybe the Boks have more depth than the Lions. In fact, with the freedom of the series already in the bag, the Boks may just cut lose. We feel South Africa will win comfortably this time, by 15 points.

Bronze = Forwards coach
The Dick = Backline coach
Balie Swart = Scrum coach
Percy = Kicking coach
Where does this leave Piet Helium?

That is the ball game gents. We can go play tiddlywinks after this – rugby has lost it’s aura – it is not for men anymore. It is for little girls. No more hard men are allowed for rugby. We should freeze Ellis park and turn it into a ice hockey rink – that is the only game where contact is still allowed in – this game is for pussies.

Nokwe was so kak that it is not even funny. Should have brought on Spies on wing right after the first 10 minutes. Nokwe’s positive contributions must be the lowest EVER.
Brussow was bloody awesome – he should have cemented his place in the starting team till he retires – or eye gouches someone.
Kirchner was mediocre – still better than Conrad Jantjes imho.
Juan Smith tried his best – but he’s not dynamic.

Chilliboy was done an injustice to play, unfair to the player FFS.
All 3 their tries were cheap tries.
kak players:
Chilli (iso Bismark)
Muller (iso Bakkies)
Nokwe (iso Habana)
Ndungane (iso Pietersen)
Diekheadson was true to his name.
Had we merely had the 2 real wingers playing today and Bismark starting, the Lions would never had won the game. Matfield also quiet without Bakkies.

Whelsh – easy now – Hougaard had a good game the one he played against the Lions – but give it time first – let him start for a Provincial side first and play a good 1 or 2 seasons. No use saying he’s the next Generaal de la Rey and discarding him after 1 or 2 bad games.

When Francois Steyn played his first game for the Sharks, it was all to evident that he was class, class and more class.
The same counts for Francois Hougaard. He looked brilliant last year for the Bulls as a subbie, the same for the u/21′s, the same this year when both FdP and Adams weren’t playing, and he singlehandedly won a crucial game for the Bulls this season with an individual performance when he came on.
Hougaard will still leapfrog Vermaak and Kokkerot soon as the favourite behind FdP (hopefully Januaty gets dropped to club level), he is a quality player.
July 4th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
People on Voldy having a go at Kankowski being a passenger. I actually recall him getting fairly involved, making tackles, chasing balls. He did not really make a lot of ground with ball in hand, but I thought he did no worse than the rest of the forwards

If the Odd One had Nokwe’s speed he would be a great wing. He should have backed himself when Fdp got him away from the scrum.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
I did note something from the game
Everyone basically (inclusive of Stewie) ignored the utter moronic stupidity that the IRB Injudicial commission wrought on world rugby when they said that clearing a ruck is illegal…
July 4th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
I think the series showed that Brussouw is a must, the front row of Beast, Bismarck and Smit mostly held their own against the NH who pride themselves as a scrumming nation – but the backup is a serious problem.
Vick and Bakkies is a must – again we are short on quality backup
Kanko / Spies – neither will shame the 8 jersey, but both need to be part of a balanced trio
Juan is probably too light for a lock – but he is becoming a bit slow for a flank.
Fdp still the best 9, but January definitely not second best. Although I still think Fdp carried some injury into the series – he never really looked confortable
Can’t go wrong with Morne – definitely has BMT. Ruan is still a good bet to have as backup – he really needs to working on his goal kicking
JdV still the best 12 – Wynand tried hard but did not really impress me today. Good on defence but got isolated too often, and he threw the intercept pass.
Mossie turned over many balls – did not really get a chance on attack. Offer different option than Adi. Again Adi played with an injury.
Daylight between JP & Habana and the rest. Nokwe is fast but that is it. Nduganes hard working grafters but too slow.
Big difference when Tina came on. Almost wished for him at 12 today with the charge up game. Wouldn’t throw Kirchner away though – just need more time

July 4th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Methos moenie kak praat nie
Pienaar was piss poor.
Watch the game again please
he struggles to pull the ball from the ruck (slow weak hands), doesn’t look round before he passes, takes a few steps to decide who he’ll pass to and then passes the ball to whoever has the biggest/most tackler(s) closest to him. Does it over and over. The other trick is to NOT keep his eye on the ball and allow it to roll out so he can again take time to pass to someone with three tacklers close to him.
Second he’s round the ruck defence does not exist… same as his old man
Third, his out of hand kicking is pathetic
Fourth, Hynie Adams played as understudy to FDP in S14 so the excuse of “one game” is non existent.
Fifth, the Frouncois Hougaard “one game” theory is pretty pathetic and piss poor seeing as Hougaard has played CC and S14 for the Bulls since 2006 so I guess you’re not following SA rugby all that closely otherwise you’d know that north of the Jukskei he’s seen as the natural successor to Joost / FDP / Adams
Please with my compliments JT and Methos have a large dose of rather keep quiet when you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Boks wear white arm bands in solidarity with Bakkies Botha
The Springbok players playing in the final Test of the Castle South Africa 2009 Lions Series against the British & Irish Lions and whom are members of the South African Rugby Players Association (SARPA) will wear white arm bands in solidarity with Springbok lock Bakkies Botha after his two week suspension and unsuccessful appeal against transgressing Law 10.4 (j) by dangerously charging into a ruck without binding on a player.
“The Springbok players all feel for Bakkies as he will miss this memorable final Test against the British & Irish Lions. As a sign of solidarity the Springbok players have decided to wear white arm bands during the Test match. At the same time the players want to send a clear message that they require the IRB to have an urgent and serious relook at Law 10.4 (j), says Piet Heymans, CEO of SARPA.
“Despite comprehensive submissions by the attorney acting for Bakkies Botha and SARPA, where a very important point of principle was developed as to the proper application of this Law, and in particular when a player lawfully binds or attempts to bind for the purpose of this Law, the appeal was not successful.
“Over an extended period of time numerous other players have charged into rucks without binding but were either not penalised at all or received only a penalty. Bakkies hit a ruck just before this one in question in a similar style and was not penalised. Coaches are coaching players to hit rucks in this manner and therefore this is a major cause of apprehension, continues Heymans.
This inconsistency has upset the players and they felt very strongly that they must take a firm stance and show their unhappiness with the application of the relevant law.
“Rugby as a spectacle will lose its excitement and appeal if the best players in the world are not sure how the laws will be applied and that their participation in world class rugby could be affected by the actions of judicial officers, says Heymans.
“We will be consulting with our legal team next week to consider all our legal options available to assist Bakkies Botha and provide him with a sense of justice as he has suffered significantly due to this suspension, concludes Heymans.

We were never in the game today,
can’t say that about the Lions in
Tests 1 and 2.
Maybe their B-team is just that
much better than ours.

Hmmm – I think it was a good
idea, not sure if their
communication with the media
was that great – otherwise we
would have known earlier.
The banning of Bakkies was also
ridiculed in a rugby show Down
Under.
As was the coach, I may add.

Could be like the protest in the old ISM North v South thing
SARU or IRB disapproved so the players took it on them, selves to stage a protest
This way it gives the live rats at SARU a plausible deniability answer to the IRB while SARPA takes the heat

Ek wonder nou net of die
M-Net regisseurs nou finaal
besef het daai geel en blou
lyne is kak.
As jy die game reg sny, kan
enige kyker dit self uitwerk
sonder daai lyne.

Ek dink maar net aan Arthur Miller se famous quote in “A Man for All Seasons” waar Cromwell vir Thomas More vertel “I’d rather be a live rat than a dead lion…”

Mense moet eerlik wees.
HULLE IS NIE SO GOED NIE!

Iemand se naam is vanaand gat:
Front Row Grunt
Boks 2nd string? Not according to Tank. Boks by plenty!
Miskien moet hy liewer gaan

Bitterly disappointed with Zane… but as good as I thought he was in the S14… the stats from the season don’t lie…
Poor old Frans… just when the coach is settling him into possie… he gets a bench start… again!
