The Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) on Thursday announced another addition to the franchise from the International Rugby Academy of New Zealand ahead of the Super 14, in former All Blacks conditioning coach Wayne Taylor.
SAPA
Taylor joined the Lions on Tuesday and the Union said in a statement they where “thrilled” to have him joining their ranks. He will work alongside the Lions’ director of coaching, Dick Muir, who filled the position towards the end of 2009.
Taylor is vastly experienced in fitness periodisation and planning, gym technique, nutrition, recovery, self massage and injury prevention, strength and conditioning, stretch and strength, team building and values and standards.
He replaces ex-conditioning coach Gerhard Jordaan, who has moved to the Boland Rugby Union, and he has experience in fitness training since 1995.
“Coaches are incredibly difficult to come by, and we at the Golden Lions Rugby Union are ecstatic that we are able to enter the 2010 Vodacom Super 14 with Dick leading the reigns and Wayne at his side,” said GLRU chief executive Manie Reyneke.
“This is going to be an exciting year for the Union, and with so many changes that have taken place over the last year, we are confident that there will be a massive change in the team come the Super 14.”

Dick’s involvement with the academy (which is an extension of the Mexted academy in NZ) will bring a lot to the Lions.
January 8th, 2010 at 8:38 am
Taylor is also a ten year long member of the NZ Army …. as much as they have one these days…. wonder if he’ll be better than Loffie.
But yeah… Dick might not be considered much of a coach in certain circles but this signing is showing me that he knows how to surround himself with people who know their stuff.
He did the same at the Sharks.
He also did not let go the Loffie coaching staff en masse.
Pity some agents have their own agenda….
January 8th, 2010 at 11:38 am
Now one can only wonder if he has built on his repetoire of game plans since he was at the Sharks. Even if he added one then atleast he doubled it.
January 8th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
They now just need to sign some decent players.

Well it’s still double the number of game plans Hero Ra$$ie has…
With the added bonus that aside from some appearances and a win at CC Final level Dick has at least reached an S14 final… which is more than some S14 coaches like those you like to fellate (Mr Perth) etc have been able to achieve

Don’t really know where you come from either.
The 2007 Sharks were a pretty complete team.
Contrast that with Rassie’s -move the ball away from the contact point- idea that was a total disaster last year.

Interesting article on the Alabama – 1966 season with some comments about race issues near the bottom.
Coach Bear Bryant has the same status in Alabama as Doc Craven has in Stellenbosch.
Note how national champions were decided by voting (democracy in action) and resulted in 3 teams claiming it because of different polls. These days they have an agreement to play 1 and 2 from the polls but #3′s fans are normally not happy.

Look closely at the football scenes in Forrest Gump and you’ll see Bear Bryant.

If you recall when Dick started with those exact same players in 2006 at S14 it was widely predicted that the harks would be the first team to get relegated in favour of the Spears…
A year later HE had made half of them Boks AND taken the team to the S14 final…
January 11th, 2010 at 9:12 am
Well I do not know where you come with that statement because if I look at the team they fielded in the warm up match against the Lions it was not bad.
Sharks’ Starting XV
15. Francois Steyn
14. Stefan Terblanche (Bok)
13. Waylon Murray (Bok)
12. Bradley Barritt
11. JP Pietersen (Bok)
10. Frederic Michalak (French International)
9. Ruan Pienaar (Bok)

Ye good players came through that year but I will not put it on Dicks plate rather the good work they did at the Sharks Academic.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:14 am
If I count correctly I get 9 Boks in that starting lineup

But like they say, if the team performs badly, then it is the coach, but if the team wins, then they have good players. It is the same story with the springboks!
January 11th, 2010 at 9:43 am
The hard part is any coach without results- is a kAk coach!
Not fair…. but stiLL!

Reply to WiLLem @ 9:43 am: Did read it, I never said that Dick was a kak coach, people must not see him as the Messiah, and he must be careful, the Lions fired Loffie after how many years with the union and how many players he build for them at junior level over a period of 11 years and 13 Springboks he from junior level and three trophy’s.

Not say ThePrick is k@k either
just that any coach without results wiLL be dEEmed kak! by the constituancy whose asperations he represent.
He did make a lot of mistakes earlier in his carEEr- something I am not unhaPPy about.
He does sEEm to be a coach that is willing to learn from his mistakes.
My view on him that he is technically quite astute – but lack the man management skiLLs that the suCCesful coaches have?
January 11th, 2010 at 10:10 am
Reply to WiLLem @ 9:57 am: My only problem with Dick is, without Super Stars will he be able to build a team that will be competitive, we all know that that they will not be able to win the S14 but we want them to be competitive and not end up last on the log.
Hopefully he will prove me wrong but I do not see a difference this year.
And if you look at last year with Loffie, they lost close games and that is something the record books shows.

NOWAY is that a 2007 or 2006 team.
Maybe last year.
And as Earl Rose and Zaheer Raylands and Thabang Molefe and countless young talents show
You can give a coach a talented youngster but you cannot turn every one of them into a superstar…
January 11th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
In 2006 Craig Davidson was above Ruan Pienaar
Muller was not at the Sharks
Beast was still “converting” from a loose forward and had played some Vodacom Cup games where he was universally called “Puppy”.
Tony Brown was their imported flyhalf not Fred Micahalak.
That fugly Namibian Kees Lensing and Deon Carsten were the props… The Du Plessis brother were still in the Free State.
Perhaps a look at history will refresh your mind….

Sharks Rugby : Awesome team for the Lions this weekend
Quote:
Dick Muir’s Sharks side to take on the Lions in a Vodacom Super 14 preseason warm-up match looks to be close to his strongest possible team available.
While Muir admitted at Monday evening’s training that the door was still open to the entire squad to stake a claim for a Super 14 starting berth, the side he has named could more than hold its own against the best the tournament has to offer.
“This is not necessarily our Number One side,” he admitted. “It is an opportunity to give everyone game time.” This includes the likes of Johan Ackermann who has come out of retirement to play for a month while Steven Sykes gets over a shoulder injury.
“For us the process is more important than the result and to give everyone a run as quite a few players haven’t had any game time yet.”
With 12 internationals in the side, the Sharks should give fans an inkling of what they are going to be capable of this year. Bearing in mind many of these players have not played any rugby since late last year, there will be an element of rustiness – as there was against the Cheetahs last Friday night – but Durban fans are in for a treat.
Wednesday night’s 7pm match at The Absa Stadium Durban is likely to be a cracker of a match, affording fans the opportunity of watching a class act as well the individual talents of the likes of Francois Steyn, JP Pietersen, Frederic Michalak, Ruan Pienaar and Ryan Kankowski (amongst others).
Although Muir admitted that he was happy with the outcome of the match against the Cheetahs, he was disappointed with the two injuries picked up, knee injuries to both Keegan Daniel and Skipper Badenhorst (twisted MCL ligaments). “The good news is that neither is too serious and both players will only be out for a couple of weeks. It isn’t operation stuff which is quite pleasing.”
Still out are Steven Sykes, Deon Carstens, Pat Cilliers and Odwa Ndungane who has a slight foot injury sustained in preseason training. All four are expected back at various stages during the course of the next month.
The curtain-raiser originally scheduled between the Wildebeest and a select Club side has been called off. Tickets for the Sharks vs Lions match at The Absa Stadium on Wednesday evening at 7pm are available at the Ticket Office at R20 for adults and R10 for scholars. Season Ticket and Suite Holders get in free, but Season Ticket Holders must collect their tickets from the Ticket Office.
The Match will not be broadcast on TV but the Sharks website will bring you live updates of the game.

Current Boks: Smit & Monty.
Future Boks: JPP, Murray, Odwa, Pienaar, BJ, Bismarck.
Ex Boks: Russell, Mentz, Jacobs, AJ, vd Berg
Also a smattering of never should have been Boks.
The important thing is that Muir took a team that came last in ’05 to 5th, 1st and 4th places in the next 3 years.
January 11th, 2010 at 6:39 pm
ja well no fine, we’ve got two good coaches and a former great kiwi flyhalf – if thats what the Lions think are going to change their fortunes, i reckon we’re infor another year of kak, even worse with the loss of fourie and alberts.

Solly Tyibilika, was also a bok in 2005 already. Ja see your point but 8 boks current and past is not a bad thing for a new man in charge. If he had 8 boks in his Lions team for this year i would have had a different story on his prospects for this year but he does not have it.
He did buy some old hands that will bring some experience to the new guys.

Earl is injured from last season and bracketed…
Teams can bracket players who are injured to make them available for selection once the tournament starts and have a replacement in place at the start of the tournament.
So when Earl is recovered his replacement will fall out and earl will return.
I think teams can bracket up to five players
The Bulls will be doing it with Bakkies I think.
