Frogs will play at Newlands
Posted by Boertjie - 02/02/10 at 03:02 pm under SpringboksSouth African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins on Tuesday confirmed that the Springboks’ Test against France on June 12 would take place at Newlands as initially planned.
The decision was announced after a positive meeting between SARU officials and Danny Jordaan, CEO of the FIFA Local Organising Committee for the Soccer World Cup.
According to the FIFA agreements with the host cities, the stadiums – including the rugby venues – need to be handed over to the organisers 15 days in advance of Soccer World Cup matches, scheduled takes place from June 11 to July 11.
It was originally suggested that FIFA won’t bend the rule, as the pitch has to be manicured and painted for the football showpiece event, while logistics and parking arrangements surrounding the stadiums have to be finalised.
However, a compromise has now been found and for the first time another major international event, a rugby Test, will now take place in the same vicinity as football World Cup matches.
“It was a very good and helpful meeting and we made significant progress,” Hoskins said in a statement on Tuesday.
“I’m pleased to announce that we have agreed that the Test against France in Cape Town on June 12 will go ahead at Newlands as originally scheduled.”
The match takes place during the FIFA 2010 World Cup at a time when other major competing sports events are not permitted to be held in hosting cities.
The meeting also addressed issues around the potential hosting of Super 14 semifinals and a Final.
“We have both been aware of the situation for some time and we in rugby have made contingency plans,” said Hoskins.
“However, our first preference has always been to play any such matches at our normal venues and Jordaan has listened to our request and is prepared to continue those discussions.
“The next step is to get the role players from the affected unions into the same room with the LOC to see if we can’t map out a compromise.”
The Super 14 semifinals and Final are scheduled for the weekends of May 21/22 and May 29 – which is not during the actual World Cup, but falls in the 15-day window ahead of the start of tournament.

well lets hope its the last international at that amateur era ‘duiwehok’ with 2 toiles.
It makes all the sense of the world for Stormers to stay at Newlands. I get that.
But it makes just as much sense to play all internationals at Green Point!

Reply to newbokshields @ 8:42 pm: Newlands will not be moved so all you can just piss off leave our stadium alone.
It is the oldest rugby stadium in SA.
Rather talk sense and merge the Lions and the Bulls and close Ellis park. Nobody wants to go their.
February 2nd, 2010 at 8:48 pm
….
luckily it was already said they will not move.
February 2nd, 2010 at 8:50 pm
No Newlands is staying and WP can miss finals and semis there every year, but when the Boks play in cape town it will be the decent stadium in the city that gets the nod, not the relic.

Newlands comes across all posh and elitist yet once you step inside its more reminiscent of an old railway station.
Just think of all the braais lighting up at sea point with a test on at Green Point?
Cape will finally have a venue able to match the durban vibe.

Reply to newbokshields @ 8:52 pm: We watch rugby when we go to stadiums here in CT, if we want to braai we pack the braai and move to C-Peak, the beach or one of our brilliant mountain camps. We do not need to braai at rugby games.
We actualy have a City that offers more than just Clubs and stadiums to braai at.

So lets go and take down the Voortrekker Monument and have our Geloftedag at the Apartheid Museum or at Reconciliation Hill. It’s old and their is a new venue

Kak bunny those things have political significance, not sporting significance.
Highbury was a great old railway stadium for Arsenal just like Newlands – then the built the new one and never looked back.
Time does not stand still.

Reply to newbokshields @ 9:09 pm: It is the same thing for me and I think you are the only one that think Newlands is a kak stadium.
I was at all our big stadiums and the best Rugby stadiums in SA FOR ME is Loftus and Newlands, the fans and the history

Heheheh we disagree then Bunny seeing as I think those two stadiums are the worst! Yes there is bucketloads of history with the teams hosted there but the stadiums are not really architectural marvels.
Kings Park is just as toss.
I just dont like these old stadiums with smelly toilets and bad infrastructure.
I went to Stade de France and have been all for modern stadium layouts.
Played a few games at the old Lansdowne. Again, great tradition but what a hole!
I dont miss the old hoenderhok Freestate stadium one bit. The new one is great. Toilets,Bars etc at easy reach, its just better more contemporary design and I like it that way.

Cool Boer solank ons die opvoeding by Greenpoint doen!

I organised a huge tour to Cape Town 2 years ago for a test match. We has seats on city side (south?) and sat in the front row which normally is great, except at Newlands the grass is higher than the first seat, or almost higher. We still talk about how we stared into ‘burgers socks’, or lukes face, which is pretty much as high.

Reply to newbokshields @ 9:19 pm: Luckily we have the DA here and not the ANC so we will be playing at Newlands for a long time.
PS. They will also not try to change our name
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:24 pm
Plus there was only one toilet on that side, and no beer stand – only a dude selling biltong and warm coke. Now if you have been pinting it up all morning its rather tough when they say you must now stop and your only options to much is salty biltong!
Its dirty and stinky and downright old school down there, certainly ot worth the ticket. Compare that to the new Ellis (have not been to any toehr new venue) and hell the difference is just huge.
It has tradition lads, thats all.

February 2nd, 2010 at 9:48 pm
wel ek kan dit in ander nuwe stadions doen? hoekom mag ek nou nie pis nie omdat `n oom fokken 70 jaar terug `n moerse drie gedruk het om WP weer di CC teen Griekwas te laat wen?
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:58 pm
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:00 pm
dis dalk omlat julle bluegums in `n mickey mouse stadion speel dat julle nooit silver huistoe vat nie?
Bloem inteendeel is `n hillbilly outpost en tog is daar `n pragtige moderne stadion waar jy kan bier drink en pee net wanneer jy wil?

ek eet julle kapenaars soos julle rugbyspelers sushi eet tjomma!
