Police are investigating the assault of a Free State rugby referee whose jaw was broken in two places by a player during a game, the Volksblad reported on Thursday.

E.J. King was assaulted in the final minutes of the second league club game between Police and the Defence Force at Bobbies Park in Bloemfontein on Tuesday night.

Free State rugby union said in a statement King was assaulted by a player from the Police rugby club in the scoring area just before the final whistle.

His jaw was broken in two places and he lost two teeth.

“The Free State rugby union sees the incident in a serious light. This is absolutely unacceptable,” the statement read.

The union said disciplinary steps would be taken against the culprit after the matter was investigated and a hearing had taken place.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Annelie Wrench confirmed the incident and said a charge of assault with intent to do grievous body harm had been laid.

Spokesperson for the Life-Rosepark hospital, Esmarie Cronj, said King’s condition was satisfactory after an operation on Wednesday afternoon.

Polisie en weermag het nog altyd hulle “kominalities” gehad, dis niks nuut nie.

Wag tot Kroonstad se gevangenis diens bykom, hulle sal die myners en car tuners van Welkom elegant en sophisticated laat lyk.

“King was assaulted by a player from the Police rugby club …a charge of assault with intent to do grievous body harm had been laid”.

Presumably the guilty party was therefore a member of the police force? Piss poor example he is setting. Deserves demotion / dismissal/ donation of his bonus to the poor ref surely? His club must also be sanctioned.

My broer “kommandeer” my op vir ‘n wedstryd vir Pretoria Munisipaliteit teen Korrektiewe Dienste so ‘n dekade gelede. No problem, vertel ek hom, sien julle Saterdag. Ek daag daar op by Zonderwater buitekant Rayton / Cullinan, ontmoet my spanmaats en vra so ewe bekommerd: Die ouens is seker fiks want die bewaarders oefen mos gereeld. Laat hoor my broertjie: Ons speel teen die bandiete, nie die bewaarders nie!! F@rk – die hardste manne wat ek nog teen gespeel het, maar die skoonste game!

Reply to Minora @ 2:03 pm: LOL – makes me think of an U/20 game I played in v Constantia Reformatory. One of the opposition was heard to say in the maul “give me the ball or I’ll steb yu ek se”! We didn’t give the guy the ball but fell on the ground laughing.
