John Smit has recovered from his hamstring injury and will lead the Springboks on Saturday in the second Test against Italy, at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London.
Smit’s inclusion at hooker is one of seven changes to the starting team – five new players and two positional switches – that beat Italy by 29-13 in Witbank last weekend. There are a further six changes on the bench.
With Victor Matfield getting a break this week, Andries Bekker is back at lock for his first Test of 2010, while Schalk Burger is also fit again and takes over at flank in the place of Dewald Potgieter.
The only players that started the first Test against Italy and are selected in the same positions, are Bryan Habana (left wing), Morné Steyn (flyhalf), Ricky Januarie (scrumhalf), Pierre Spies (No.8), Francois Louw (flank), Bakkies Botha (lock), Jannie du Plessis (tighthead prop) and Gurthrö Steenkamp (loosehead prop).
Gio Aplon moves from right wing to fullback and Jean de Villiers from centre to wing, while Bekker, Burger, Jaque Fourie, Juan de Jongh and Smit will all get their first start against Italy this season.
BJ Botha, Danie Rossouw and Wynand Olivier have been included on the bench after not featuring in Witbank.
Matfield, Zane Kirchner, Bandise Maku, CJ van der Linde, Alistair Hargreaves, Ryan Kankowski and Bjorn Basson drop out of the 22.

Wat ek wel weet is dat `n Tri nations campaign en `n World Cup campaign 2 baie verkillende goed is.
Ek gaan dit nie in `n kortverhaal verduidelik nie behalwe om te se dat `n speler soos Chilly fine is vir `n Tri nations campaign maar dat ek eerder vir Gary Botha saamvat World Cup toe.

Sjoe maar diens is stadig en half kak ook in meeste van die plekke. En mens kry ooknie die ‘balance’ reg tussen moer duur en moer cheap nie. Alles in Vishoek is cheap. Alles in Kalk Baai is duur. Simons Town nognie so lekker ondie die knie nie maar lekker lunch gehad in cool plekkie met goeie diens en alles.
Kapenaars is heel sweet tot die goed begin rugby praat. Dis baie soos om met `n Indier te praat oor manchester United – hy ken net 2 spelers se naam maar dink die span is god en niks wat jy se gaan by die ore in nie. Verseker meer eenogig as die Bulls mense!

ek moet ook byvoeg boer dat jou NP manne die kaap ook mooi opgeneuk het met hulle horing approach tot urban design. So mooi plek en tog so swak uitgele. Die hele stad moe wees soos die Bo-Kaap nou is: werkersklas en middelklas en opperklas almal saam. Apartheid era argitektuur ook `n rerige blotch op die landskap.
Hehehehe die plek genaamd “sonnekus” in Kampsbaai! Wat `n draak lelike stuk stront smack bang in die middel van een van die mooiste plekke op aarde. Die afrikaners moes nooit by bouwerk betrokke geraal het nie.

yes you are right that he could have but does that make it wrong to work on combinations/continuity if he chose to do so?
What he did was 50/50 of each and it was a bit of a f-up due to IMO the attitude of the players after their win against the French – almal te groot vir hulle skoene ala Habs!
This weekend he could again go either way but he chose to work on continuity with some combinations while trying out a few guys in position like JdV at 14 and Aplon at 15 and blooding guys like Juan. Is that wrong? NO because there is no right or wrong only opinion.
Looks like the 1st choice back-line for the 3N is playing on Saturday:
RJ, Morne, Juan, Fourie – but PdV seems unsure on the back 3 and in which combination the back 3 will start. it looks like he believes that JdV is to good to leave out and Juan has a future and all the other bonus’s that go with that selection. So that is why JdV getting a run at wing.
Up front it looks like the 1st choice FR is starting on Saturday with the bench locks and 1st choice back-row.
Just my observation.
