Kiwis can reap lots if they win WC

The All Blacks have been given 100,000 good reasons to become the first New Zealand side to lift the Webb Ellis Trophy in 24 years.

Dylan Cleaver, NZ Herald

NZ $1 = ZA R5,34

The Collective Agreement between the New Zealand Rugby Union and the Players’ Association, which was formally ratified yesterday, sets in stone a payment of $100,000 to each member of the All Blacks squad should they win next year’s showpiece event.

Should they make the final at Eden Park and lose, they will receive $35,000 each. Just to prove there’s no such thing as a bronze medal in rugby, anything less than second equals $0.

Players’ Association manager Rob Nichol, who negotiated the terms with the NZRU, said the figure did not deviate from the past two world cups.

“We went through a robust process in 2003 and came out with a good outcome,” Mr Nichol said. “We saw no reason to change.”

The World Cup bonus is not the only win for the players in the agreement, which runs through to the end of 2012. Players will now receive $1000 a day to take part in commercial photo shoots, filming or recording sessions.

A clause in the agreement states that the NZRU cannot assign the players’ image rights to Rugby World Cup Ltd, meaning the company will be forced to negotiate the release of those rights with the players themselves.

If that sounds like brinkmanship, Mr Nichol said there was no chance the All Blacks would not take the field at the New Zealand-hosted event – the International Rugby Players’ Association and Rugby World Cup Ltd had entered similar discussions before the 2007 event and had resolved them.

Off topic, but I hijacked this Q&A from the SARU website

Question:Please let us know when you will (put) the petty personal issues aside and select the best fullback talent we have had in years. Frans (Steyn) is the most talented player since Naas Botha, but you let your personal feelings get in the way of us winning the 3N and the WC. You are supposedly to be objective, clearly not. Dawid Louw

Peter replies: Dawid, I am glad you asked that question. Thanks to Steven Hapelt, Gerrit Conradie, Mandy Kotze, Simon Clements and Jacques Harmse too for asking about Frans. There are no problems between Frans and I and I certainly do not have “petty” issues with him. I will never deny any player the opportunity of playing for his country. The truth is that Frans was only available for the Wales Test. Further discussion is needed with his club and agent about future availability and this is being dealt with presently. You have fallen for the perception created in the media that there may be issues between myself and the player which is untrue.

So it seems that FS is not available because of club commitments

Anyone know if the “window” includes the 3N tests?

    Release for Designated Events

    Rugby World Cup and Qualification
    Rugby World Cup Sevens
    British & Irish Lions Tour
    Olympic Rugby Tournament and Qualification

    Global release periods

June international window – the right to release for the senior national representative team, the next senior national representative team and the Under 20 national representative team. Three matches played in June.
November international window – the right to release for the senior national representative team, the next senior national representative team and the Under 20 national representative team. Three matches played in November.
There are no Global Release Periods in a Rugby World Cup year.

    Hemisphere Release Periods

Annual release period for Northern Hemisphere eligible players:
Five weeks (matches) out of the seven weeks from the first weekend of February to the third weekend of March for the senior national representative team, the next senior national representative team and the Under 20 national representative team.

Annual release period for Southern Hemisphere eligible players:
Six weeks (matches) out of the nine weeks from July 1 to August 31 for the senior national representative team, the next senior national representative team and the Under 20 national representative team.

    Ollie

If you return to the Tina thread and read carefully you will note that the involvement of the aent is exactly what I suggested as the reason for Steyn being left out. In fact I sketched a scenario.

    I’ll repeat it.

Say you’re an failed lawyer with one star player you are aent to and you place him with a French club willing to spend big dollars on a star player as they try to get Heineken Cup qualification.

Now remember in France a player MUST take a compulsory five week break from rugby.

And say this player’s nation asks him to play for them in Tri Nations… which falls within your club’s break… which means he is away till what… end September… and then he returns and MUST take that five week break so you get him back and then his team arrives for the northern hemisphere tours (and his team has a grand slam tour)… so provided he does not get injured you only get your top paid player and southern hemisphere phenom back in December 2010 …. exactly how do you react to that…

You tell the aent you want to renegotiate his commission …. you know the commission he is counting on… has maybe already spent…. and the agent… well his got a player who is not so bright as a client… and he tells the player the player’s salary is under threat… and the agent will sort it out…

Now what do you as an agent do?

It was not me who suggested a plot from the WP to keep Frans Steyn out of the team…

But as JT alluded to in a sidelong view…

What exactly would the coach say on the SAU blog…

Ja I hate that little f—ker and hope he chokes on his Racing jersey with his agent… he’ll never play for the Boks again…

ps. The coats does not draft those answers BTW….SARU communications does….

I trust that you are aware how most large corporates work… for instance when the country’s president or a famous movie star has a blog he does not really type the answers… they have publicists and communication experts who communicate… I’m sure that the erudite, intelligent and well crafted ENGLISH answer is surely a very good indicatiion that PdV was not the one who wrote that answer…

Club has no leg to stand on but I remember a few seasons ago when we had the PI Lions there was this issue with the Wasps hooker. The club put pressure on him to retire from Intl rugby because they needed him to rest and be fit for the new season. If he did NOT he would lose his contract. Of course this was a brief issue but then swept under the rug.

    Now if I put 1 and 1 together I get 11! ;-)
I think FS has withdrawn because he “needs the rest” and probably threatened with retirement! I think he does want to play in the Wc and probably thinks his best chance is to rest now and have a good season in france which will include the EOYT for the Bokke.

BUT I had to chuckle when the Rugby Club hosted the CEO of the WCNZ bid last week. Kearnsie asked him if they will accept volunteers from Australia seeing that such an event requires volunteers to be successful. His answer: For sure, we will just have to do police checks on all of them.

Nothing wrong with the time zones for me.

Easy to pop over for the game. No need to pay for expensive hotels.

Timezones pla my ook nie rerig nie. Net bier smaak nie heeltemal dieselfde 7 uur in die oggend nie. :support:

Wat voel ek vir Europa? Hulle het groter probleme as om worry oor wanneer die rugby uitgesaai word.
