Bakkies gets 9 weeks ban

Bakkies Botha will miss the whole of the Springboks’ Tri-Nations campaign, after being banned for nine weeks for head-butting All Blacks scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan during Saturday’s Tri-Nations Test.

SANZAR judicial officer Dennis Wheelahan considered Botha’s previous record before issuing the star Blue Bulls lock with the suspension.

Botha was cited by SANZAR citing commissioner Scott Nowland for striking with the head, following a tackle on Cowan in the opening minute of the Test match, which the All Blacks won 32-12.

New Zealand coach Graham Henry said Botha was lucky not to have been banned for longer than nine weeks for the head-butt at Eden Park.

“I’m not surprised,” said Henry, according to sportinglife.com.

“He’s probably lucky he didn’t get more than nine weeks. It’s not part of the game and it has been dealt with correctly.”

The incident happened when Cowan held Botha – who was later yellow carded for a professional foul – back while they were chasing a kick through.

Botha was recently suspended for four weeks for a similar offence while playing for the Bulls against the Stormers in a Super 14 match at Newlands. He has a long record of suspensions over the years.

John Smit re Bakkies on Sky:

“(It was) very silly,” he said, before explaining why he thought the Springboks lost in Auckland.

“I don’t approve of any of my players playing outside the rules and it was an ill-disciplined, very poor first half which meant we had no momentum. Only Bakkies can explain what goes on in his head,” Smit said.

“Discipline wins and loses you Tests. We’ve got lots to work on and we certainly didn’t arrive today.

“In the past we’ve been able to put more pressure on them defensively and today we let them slip through. When you get that quick ball it’s hard to stop.”

They should have banned him for 12 months…….Boks need to send him packing until he sort out his kak. Danie is playing much better than him in anyway.

Short memory hey asterhole? Remember when Bakkies won us matches?

In any case – he screwed up badly and deserves what coming to him.

Maybe John should find another game to play. Rugby has no rules. It does have laws however.
