Northland prodigy Rene Ranger will start his first Test match on the left wing in one of two changes to the All Blacks starting XV from the 32-12 victory at Eden Park.
Sportal.co.nz
Ranger, who made his Test debut off the bench against Wales in Hamilton last month, replaces the injured Josevata Rokocoko (strained hamstring) while Piri Weepu will make his first Test start since Scotland, 2008.
Weepu has not worn the All Black’s No.9 jumper at Westpac Stadium since he faced the Springboks in 2006.
Jimmy Cowan has recovered from an abdominal complaint, but has been relegated to the bench where he is joined by Israel Dagg, who provides outside back cover.
All Blacks coach Graham Henry said: “We have stuck with the majority of players who played so well in last week’s win at Eden Park and they are ready for what will be another major contest. The players know that they will face a different, more physical Springboks side.”
Richard Kahui will see a specialist on Monday for a further assessment on the extent of his shoulder injury.
“It’s hugely disappointing for Richard who has played extremely well for the All Blacks and contributed greatly to the team so far this year and he will be sorely missed. We will await advice from the medical team on how long he will be out for,” Henry added.

This saturday PdV wins another in NZ
Going with last weeks score
Boks 21

(Wonder what the record is for the highest number of wins by a coach against the AB’s in NZ)

interesting question:
I watched that the last few days!
1981 we won 1
Kitch – did not play them in NZ
Mac – fokkol
Markgraaf – fokkol
1997 we won 1 under Mallett
Viljoen – fokkol
Streauli – fokkol
Jake did not win in NZ AFAIK. One close one though
PdV already has 2 wins, 1 in Dunedin FFS!! This could be #3
Not 100% sure on all the coaches.

Reply to JT @ 9:57 am: Ja swaer but PdV is mos lucky to be surrounded by such great bunch of player-coaches.
He must be the luckiest coach ever.

Hoessit Tjops.
Hmmm. A few that did not pass the fitness test. My most sincere & heartfelt empathy, I’m also not passing the fitness test. :snotentrane:
Our 2 teams played Dagbreek koshuis from Stellenbosch yesterday evening, won both convincingly. I started at lock for seccies, 2 fatties fell on me after I cleaned them and I though I got the wind knocked out of me. Mean time is my rib af, how nice. Nog aangespeel to halftyd toe haal hulle my af.
4-6 weke uit, dan’s die seisoen ook min of meer verby. Ai, groot ai.

Jake had two close ones
In 2004 the AB’s beat us by a try that they scored right off the wing on the hooter because of poor defence by Jean De Villiers… the try came when we lost possession close to our tryline in a lineout… some say if Vic Matfield had played we would have retained possession.
In 2005 at the House of Pain the AB’s mauled off the back of a lineout near our line and Keven Mealamu scored… this time again because Joe Van Niekerk and Juan Smith decided (in spite of Vic’s instructions) NOT to contest a lineout throw at the back which they could have won with ease. Juan later blamed Big Joke for the loss and after the try you can see Smith actually angrily exchanging words with Joe van Niekerk. Shock and horror and even though the AB’s will never admit it in the open the try came because of that hated thing the AB’;s would never stoop to as a nation of running rugby players… namely a “maul”… something totally unknown in New Zealand…
Who coached the 1937 Boks?
1921 Boks managed a win and a draw but there is no mention of who coached the team.
1937 Boks won 2/3 as well as a 2/2 series in Aus… but no mention of who the coach was
In 1949 the Boks did a 4-0 whitewash here in SA of the AB’s and Danie Craven coached
In 1956 with Craven coaching we managed to win 1/4 there
1970 home series with Boy Louw coaching beat them 3-1 here
1976 with Ian Kirkpatrick coaching we beat them 3-1 here
1982 Nelie Smith did one 1/3 there
1994 Ian Macintish managed a draw in a three test series there
In 1996 Andre Varkgat managed to lose 3/4 tests against them in SA… skande… fokken skande
Since then…
1998 Mallett 1 win (he had one Stefan Tereblanche of the Boland Cavaliers on the wing…)
The next win there was PDV 2008 at Dunedin… but he then lost 2/3 against them that season including a home loss…
_______________________________________________________
If anyone whinges about Bok results again….
In 1965 we played 8 tests and won 1 (including series against NZ(3-1 loss) and Aus (2-0 whitewash) and losses to Scotland and Ireland)… to add insult to injury the following year started with a loss and a draw to France so 8 consecutive games without a win and 1967 ended with two wins that ended a streak of 4 wins in 14 matches… perhaps the fact that we averaged half a team from WP (6 to 7 per match in an era when there was no Currie Cup but Northern transvaal dominated local rugby). If that happened today the coach , staff and skipper would be lynched from a lamp pole at ORT when the team arrived from overseas…

thx for the stats – I remember the incident with Juan and Joe well! One was suppose to lift and was late or did not bother and the other was pissed off big time. Directly led to the maul and try.
So if PdV wins this weekend he will be the most successful SA coach to coach against the AB’s! What about internationally? I know that a french coach got two wins in 1994 in NZ, any other coaches win more than 2 in NZ? Surely an Aussie at some stage? McQueen maybe?
July 15th, 2010 at 11:50 am
Reply to DavidS @ 11:25 am: I think Doc Craven was the first ‘official’ coach.
Up to then, if I’m not mistaken, it was frowned upon to have a coach.
July 15th, 2010 at 12:21 pm
JT
He already is
He has 3 wins there
Dunno about test results between Aus NZ going back a ways
I think the 1970 Lions clouted them something terrible too
But McQueen’s team beat them in NZ a few times and coached them 1997 to 2001
Amazingly in the 1990′s the Aussies had a record against the Kiwis of 23 played and 11 won!
Anyway the McQueen Aussies record of wins in NZ
1998 beat them at Jade
2000 beat them at Westpac*
2001 beat them at Westpac*
* this was consecutive and ended with a a third consecutive win at Stadium Australia.. Rod’s best performance and presaged by two consecutive wins at Stadium Australia so McQueen had five consecutive wins against them from Aug 1999 to Sept 2001, but three of them were in Aus.
July 15th, 2010 at 12:24 pm
ps… the 1971 Lions only beat them 2-1 with one draw… and that was the only loss in NZ
Test series going
2 wins
1 draw
1 loss
So in other words no other coach has managed three consecutive wins in NZ and from what i see no team has ever manged three consecutive wins against NZ in NZ… not even McQuuen’s Invincible Aussies
July 15th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
So despite the NZ dikbeks PDV has already made history
July 15th, 2010 at 12:35 pm
COACHES
I have an idea that in the early
days the captain was also the
coach.
Some of the important series:
1949 – Craven. He also gave the
All Blacks some tips re the
scrummage formation.
1951 – BRI – Craven. Went by ship, and
he had a whole worked out training
program. I think Hennie Muller was
his main assistant.
1955 – BIL – Craven
1956 – Craven.
1965 – Muller.
1958 – FRA, Kenyon
1960 – Muller
1965 – Muller
1967 – FRA, Kirkpatrick
1969 – AUS, Avril Malan
1970 – Johan Claassen
1974 – BIL, Claassen
1981 – Nelie Smith
July 15th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
Reply to DavidS @ 12:25 pm:
not sure about that. PdV only won 1 in 2008 in NZ and 1 in 2009!?
We lost the 1st in 2010 so no 3 in a row in NZ
But we could try and do it again starting this weekend
July 15th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
So mCQueen the best coach to coach against NZ in NZ! With 3 wins
That just shows how tough the Kiwis are to beat at home!
July 15th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
Reply to JT @ 12:41 pm:
Oh right I get it
McQueen appears to be the winningest coach against NZ in NZ
Pretty much outside NZ too
Remember Sept 1997 to end 2001
Played vs NZ = 8
Won = 6
Lost = 2
Motherfragger!
Ours in the same period v Aus
Played = 10
Aus won = 5
Lost = 4
Draw = 1
One of those losses was the RWC semi final 1999…. where that larkham poephol kicked a ridiculous drop goal
July 15th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
But of those wins only ONE was in SA and that was the infamous 19-18 loss in Durban in 2000
July 15th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Now who is not paying attention
July 15th, 2010 at 10:16 pm
Hey I never pay attention to the Olster
My job here is to piss him off and expose the SSL for the false prophet he has become
And to gently poke fun at GOM…
And occasionally say something so intelligent that it takes posters a few hours to understand how profoundly brilliant a genius I am that they do not deserve my presence…
Hope there are some nice French girlies on the beaches the Olster visits
And even though this is not PC I trust the French soccer team is not demographically representative of the population he is likely to encouner on the beach…
