The Southern Kings are set to play Super rugby in 2013 -without replacing one of the five existing SA franchises as the Super 15 is set to become a Super16 in three years’ time.
JJ Harmse, Sport24
Sport24 has reliably learned that the proposal by South Africa at a SANZAR meeting had been accepted in principle by New Zealand and Australia.
A working committee will iron out the finer details of the issue.
The inclusion of the Kings, who will play in the South African conference, may mean that South African teams start their Super rugby campaigns two weeks earlier than usual.
The news will be welcomed by the Kings. They have been fighting for recognition as a Super rugby team for a number of years, but have had their participation postponed every time. The Kings can now continue to enlarge their player base and negotiate with sponsors.
The latest development is also good news for the South African Rugby Union (SARU), who gave the government an undertaking that the Eastern Cape would be incorporated in the mainstream of rugby.
Next year’s Super15
The Super 15 of 2011 starts with teams from the respective countries first participating in derbies against one another before taking on overseas opponents.
The Bulls, Stormers, Lions, Cheetahs and Sharks will play each other home and away, while the same will happen in New Zealand.
With the Kings’ expected involvement in 2013, it may mean that three Super rugby derbies are played per weekend.
Meanwhile, Michael Green reports that Kings chief executive Stephan Pretorius still insisted a few months ago that the franchise should play Super rugby next year.
There was talk at SARU that the Kings may participate in a European competition later this year. Nothing has come of that, nor have any of the mooted friendly matches against international opponents materialised

Reprieve for the Lions?

The Lions, of course, is the
only franchise that is blameles
for the current Bok woes:
They don’t have a single member
in the side.

Not going to happen…
July 22nd, 2010 at 4:15 am
5 teams with a relegation… but the above will not happen with Foxsports running the show…
July 22nd, 2010 at 8:48 am
Given the fact that usually in SA we have one competitive side in S14 and sometimes two and the rest are a mid table finish and two beyond 10th finishes with the Lions at 14 swopping with the Reds occasionally.
The idea of taking a union filled with corrupt officials that fired its coach who took them to semis of CC because he wouldn’t select an African player who did not merit inclusion, have made their stadium bankrupt, have destroyed a brand that produced an amazing array of excellent players in the past and in a province and city which is laughed off as a corrupt African state example of how not to do things and then giving them their second Super rugby franchise in less than ten years after they pulled the first through their asses is frigging ridiculous..
All we’re doing is ensuring yet another local franchise finishes bottom of the log…
Fact is
The SA team should have THREE regional franchises and SARU should be running the show the way they do in NZ.

“The Bulls, Stormers, Lions, Cheetahs and Sharks will play each other home and away, while the same will happen in New Zealand.”
Nowatno, sal S15 2011 dan round-robin wees en nie almal speel teen almal? Dis tog nie soos ek dit verstaan het nie?

Assablief ja, vir my ook!
Bladdy stupid idea if you ask me. Cheethas & Lions already struggling finacially to begin with. Not even talking about depth. A novel idea of getting back all/some of the overseas players, but simply not the $$$ to do so.

“Meanwhile, Michael Green reports that Kings chief executive Stephan Pretorius still insisted a few months ago that the franchise should play Super rugby next year.”
Hoe ‘insist’ mens in so ‘n geval…slaan met ‘n gebalde vuis op die tafel en gluur die res aan met ‘n geligte wenkbrou?
Vernaam as jy
se feite/inligting in gedagte hou.

Sien ‘n ander mannetjie is by WP se rugbyakademie.

Let me quantify this… there will be a PI team before any SARU pollie team ever happens!
And duly so!
July 22nd, 2010 at 1:29 pm
AFAIK the S15 is to be run thus:
All “conference” teams play
home and away.
Then they play the OZ and Kiwi
teams – some home, some away
like before.
9 games + 10 games = 19
Then the Top 6 play a
play-off round followed
by semi and final.
Please correct.
