Div to intervene in Mapoe saga

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers wants to intervene in the Lionel Mapoe saga.

Hendrik Cronje – Sport24

If the Bok coach has his way, the Sevens Springbok will be back on the field as soon as possible so that the national selectors can consider him for higher honours.

De Villiers is so serious about the matter that he wanted to meet with the wing, agent Jan-Harm van Wyk, Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské and Sharks director of coaching Rudolf Straeuli at 07:00 on Wednesday.

However, Sport24 has heard that the meeting has been postponed by the Bok coach. The reason is unknown.

Free State president Harold Verster confirmed that he knew about the proposed meeting.

“The saga is just taking a new twist every day and Mapoe has not yet returned. We are now considering further steps,” said Verster.

“The meeting is off because they also wanted to bring the Sharks in and we had to protect our rights.”

Advocate Bertus van Rhyn, the arbitrator in the tug-of-war between Free State and the Sharks about the player’s services, had ordered Mapoe to report for Currie Cup duty in Bloemfontein.

However, Mapoe is still in Durban and the Cheetahs cannot consider him for their team.

Sport24 can also reveal that Mapoe is considering furthering his career at an Australian rugby league side. He has apparently received an offer.

Mapoe has not played Currie Cup rugby yet following his recovery from a shoulder injury because of the tug-of-war between Free State and the Sharks.

The only way he will be able to be considered for the Sharks is if they are prepared to pay a big transfer fee to the Cheetahs, who still have a legally binding contract with the player.

If they don’t do that and Mapoe is not issued with a clearance certificate, he will have no choice but to play for the Cheetahs or continue his career in Australia.

Sport24 understands that Mapoe is in De Villiers’s plans and may be included in the squad for the end-of-season tour to Britain and Ireland. He has apparently been earmarked to play for the Boks at next year’s World Cup in New Zealand.

Insane… the buffoon cannot even pick up the phone to inform Frans Steyn that he will not be honoring and assurance he made to the youngster… nor bother to inform him he is in the 3N let alone EOYT plans… yet can find the time, TEST WEEK, for all this for a player with potential (nothing more at Super level yet)!

    I wonder why that is?

    What a clown!

Somebody needs to sort out these contractual tug-o-wars that have been raising their heads lately. Some bad precedents are likely to be set if they continue they way they are.

I reckon SARU needs to step in and discipline some Unions/Players/Agents to ensure that when a decision is made by the arbitrator or courts or whatever and ignored

First they need to set out agent protocol and heavily fine, or suspend cowboy agents.

“…the Sevens Springbok [Mapoe] will be back on the field as soon as possible so that the national selectors can consider him for higher honours”
Makes sense, he’ll need to play again to be gauged.

“Sport24 understands that Mapoe is in De Villiers’s plans and may be included in the squad for the end-of-season tour to Britain and Ireland. He has apparently been earmarked to play for the Boks at next year’s World Cup in New Zealand.”
Not stated as fact, I know, but if this is the case is is a crock of horse :poop: . Gives more ammo to the that other punter’s long piece about Snor & quotas. Dom, f@kt@p.

Mapoe showed promise, he really looked like a quick & dangerous finisher. That was year ago though, will he be the same still? We’ll see if he plays, for sure. But because of the color of his skin there’s (apparently) already a RWC2011 Bok blazer sized for him.

Now if Snor stuck to coaching and made sure SARU follows proper procedure rather occupy his time with sh!t like this, people would have less to criticize about.

Net ‘n akrobaat & vrou met baard kort van ‘n sirkus, ons het klaar klomp :Dawie: e en ‘n :jester: !!!

Mind you, this whole shebang started with FS and its incompetency. Apparently they were paying Mapoe peanuts and only arranged him a sponsorship when he asked for more money.

A contract is a contract though, if you signed on the dotted line you’ll have to suck it up.

Mvovo, Mapoe… two players that appear to be strong and fast at CC level… neither have ‘yet’ shown the rest of what is needed at the top level for a more complete winger ‘destined’ for higher accolades… ie a step, hands, vision, boot…

Too many looking for the next black messiah!

Basson has shown all of the above at CC level so far… and none other than GVDH was one of the best wingers in the S14 stats… and that’s with a few games missed!

Agreed that these guys need to still show what they can do at S14 level.

But the unofficially official quota number needs to be filled and experiments to find the best might as well be searched for.
