Frans Steyn is the only change to the starting XV for the Springboks this weekend.
Management is waiting on the fitness of Alberts before finalising the bench with either Alberts or Daniel expected to complete the match-day 22. Unlucky player to miss out on match-day 22 selection is Adi Jacobs who drops out completely.
“We pulled this team together at short notice for last week’s Test and after they performed against Ireland, but we couldn’t ignore the experience of Frans Steyn,” said de Villiers.
De Villiers had welcomed the arrival Steyn into the squad on Sunday – from duty with his French club – and had no hesitation in getting him straight into action.
“He has only had two field training sessions with us to date so he is still slotting himself back in, but he has brought real enthusiasm to the squad and it’s a pleasure to have him back with us.”
De Villiers said he expected a fierce onslaught from Wales: “They have been bitterly disappointed on a couple of recent occasions when they felt they could have beaten us and they’ll be looking to put that right,” he said.
“They’ll be hurting after losing to the Wallabies at the weekend and I’m sure they’ve targeted us as the soft target in their three matches against the Vodacom Tri-Nations teams.
“We’ve had a tough year, but we’re only focusing on delivering another improved performance on Saturday and then the result should look after itself.”

Matfield the skipper I assume?
Decent enough
Midfield looking much better with Frans at 12
November 9th, 2010 at 2:50 pm
The 22?
November 9th, 2010 at 2:51 pm
Steyn/JDV combo was more important, would have kept that and put Frans in… would not have dropped Kirchner but moved to his preferred position and Aplon to 14…
Alberts will more than likely be the only change (if fit) to the bench… (touch-wood)…
November 9th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
Happier with this team than last weeks and less worried about the Wales match now

Why TBC and not Alberts/Daniels (bracketed)…
IMO no need for 3 backs with Francois and Lambie there…

That is how they released it…
Weird.

TBC = To Be Colour?

First thing I thought… (permission from SARU to only field 6 this week)… but then I saw the original release has the TBC next to 19…

19?
November 9th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
16 Chiliboy Ralepelle
17 CJ van der Linde
18 Flip van der Merwe
19 TBC
20 Francois Hougaard
21 Zane Kirchner
22 Patrick Lambie
Interesting
Does that mean they’re still deciding on daniel and Alberts?
Bit of a no brainer IMO

Reads like this on the SARU site…
15 Gio Aplon, 14 Bjorn Basson, 13 Frans Steyn, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Victor Matfield (c), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 CJ van der Linde, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 TBC, 20 Francois Hougaard, 21 Zane Kirchner, 22 Pat Lambie.

The media release says nothing about the TBC position.
IRB Regs says the team needs to be finally announced by no later than 48 hours before the test match so they can write TBC (To Be Confirmed)

Alberts probably still with a niggle… and maybe the decision between Kanko/Daniels and Alberts depending on the roof…
November 9th, 2010 at 3:37 pm
I like the team.
Glad Basson gets another chance. Maybe he sees a ball this time around.
Would have preferred Kanko/Alberts in place of you-know-who.
Now please Snor: Make intelligent subs.
I know I’m asking a lot, but try.

What I was meaning was what difference does it make if the TBC is for 19 or 22?

Reply to bryce_in_oz @ 3:34 pm:
Yup
More rain predicted…
Media telling the Welsh that after Saturday they’d be well advised not to try and play the Bokke in the rain…
Bokke don’t appear to care either way…
November 9th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
Irish media suggesting “close the roof” and run at them
I have an idea that may backfire intensely
November 9th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
Reply to DavidS @ 3:59 pm:
If it doesn’t backfire it is still going to physically hurt big time
November 9th, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Just give Basson one decent chance: rain, hail or snow.
I like this wing.
November 9th, 2010 at 4:43 pm
Reply to Boertjie @ 4:37 pm:
I just haven’t seen him tackle…
This Saturday was not a test in that department but yes he has lots of potential and appears to have lots in the arsenal…
November 9th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
Aplon did not really look comfortable at 15. Especially returning the kicks from Sexton.
November 9th, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Would drop Habana, Aplon to wing, Kirchner to 15, Frans to 12, JdV to 13
November 9th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
good team.
if boertjie can flog his horse, let me flog mine:
steyn and jean has loads of experience and talent. The opposition will also fear their ‘names’ on paper.
But I dont expect much fireworks creatively from these two. Mostly bash and more bash.
BUT
sometimes combos add up to more than the sum of its parts, so who knows?
I might be surprised and thats exciting!

Well, if I have only one wish:
Habana out – Hougaard in.
Could do Habana a lot of good.
And I’d like to see Alberts in G&G sometime.

Reply to Bokhoring T @ 4:56 pm:
Disagree
His out of air catching was far far far better than we’ve seen in a while and his own hoists and chasing them was outstanding..

Reply to Bokhoring T @ 4:56 pm:
I have to agree. having played 7′s you would expect Aplon to know one-on-one defence like this yet he faltered both times.

Reply to DavidS @ 5:10 pm:
ja and in bok team thats the only skill a wing needs hey.

Ja. I’m a bit of an Aplon fan – always respect little guys stopping opponents -
but his positional play let him down a few times.
What I’ve seen of Basson is that he is marvellous under the high ball and has good attacking skills.
But that was CC.
November 9th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
Reply to DavidS @ 5:10 pm: Sexton kicked deep from his own half, Aplon caught and most of his line kicks made between the 22 and 10 meter line. Result Irish in SA half. Fortunately the SA lineout was king, and the Irish could not really do much with the territory.
The problem for me was he often kicked from near the goal line – did not try and run it closer to the 22 and then kick. Perhaps he was worried about a charge down
Apart from that, and not making up his mind what to do with O’Gara’s kick, he had a very good game
November 9th, 2010 at 6:29 pm
Reply to Bokhoring T @ 5:00 pm:
I would also play Frans at 12 and JdV at 13 instead of the other way round…
The rest – agree as well!

Read properly you twab
In the other thread where Boetjie and I were discussing Bjorn Basson I said that he has all the skills but we do not know how his defence is… to determine if he’s the complete package…
But hey if you want Tonderai Chavanga and Wandile Mjekevu be my guest… after all they both run the 100 metres in under 11 seconds!
And in the Brendan school of rugby thought that’s all a Bok wing needs hey…
November 9th, 2010 at 6:38 pm
I’m cool with Frans Steyn where he is…
Far more versatile a player than Jen De Villiers
November 11th, 2010 at 10:32 am
The battle of the “little” guys this weekend, Williams vs Aplon or 77kg vs 78kg.
