Sharks loose-forward, Jean Deysel, has been added to the wider Springbok squad.
Sharks looseforward Jean Deysel has been added to the Springbok training squad in Cape Town because of injuries. Deysel, who made his Test debut against Italy on the 2009 end-of-year tour, joined the group on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old has been called in as cover because of injuries to looseforwards Juan Smith, Schalk Burger, Willem Alberts and Duane Vermeulen.
Meanwhile Springbok management has moved to correct reports that Jacques Nienaber had been added to the Springbok management team for the Rugby World Cup.
The highly successful Stormers defensive coach is assisting the team on a short-term basis. He will shortly return to his duties as part of the DHL Western Province management team for the Absa Currie Cup.

Josh Strauss should have been given a chance. Why must Lions players go play elsewhere to become Bok candidates? When Alberts played for the Lions we knew he was Bok material but in a Sharks jersey he got selected. Stop punishing the players for the mistakes made by management. Please.

Deysel is already capped and has been a part of the Bok set-up… and offers far more than the green-horn around the paddock in that he also turns ball over…
Strauss needs another Super Season behind him and needs to learn to get his average miss-tackle count up.
Same goes for Whitely…

Kat the same goes for the cheetah players, sarel pretorius, riaan viljoen?
July 6th, 2011 at 10:14 am
That Sarel Pretorius was left out is a disgrace. A Bok coach and the selectors should look beyond the team players play for and appreciate the quality of players playing well despite team results. It is easier to shine in a good team and much tougher to do so in a weak team. Does that not say more about the quality of the player do well in the weak team? In my mind that is the player you want when the chips are down.

Is Alberts better now than he was at the Lions? Nope. But he’s a Bok now and probably would not have been if he was still playing for the Lions.

Alberts played 8th man and lock at the Lions… and yes I do think he has improved…
How is it a disgrace that Sarel was left out… unfortunate yes… but there is Fourie Du Preez, Francois Hougaard and Ruan Pienaar… how many more 9′s do you want in a 30 man squad?
It’s ridiculous we’re the only nation with a 49 man ‘training’ squad as it is…
I forgot McLeod whom even as a Sharks supporter I don’t really rate… but it’s not like he’ll be leaving on the plane and more than likely down to personal choice of the selectors when it comes to test rugby…
As exciting, nuggety and sniping as Sarel is… he has his deficiencies too… terrible pass, average defence and no kicking game…
The Tahs might improve that… and you’ll see him in the test side next year behind Hougaard if they do…
Personally I think a Japie playing Super Rugby in Aus/NZ has more validity/chance of making the Bok side than one plying his trade in the Northern Hemisphere…

I echo Kat’s laments. I am glad you chose to comment Kat, you are obviously a genius when it comes to rugby talent assessment.
The only thing remarkable about Jean Deysel is that he looks like Dean Hall – whoop de doo. Josh Strauss is a stud who is tireless and NEVER gets taken for a loss. Due to his freakish long arms he can also offload and often takes more than one defender before he does so.
It’s not so much that “Super” Pretorious would have a spot to play in the WC setup, its more the fact that PDV would take MCLEOD over the Super in the 46 man setup. If that is not a clarion call to drugtest selectors and coaching staff members I don’t know what is.
As far as Super playing for a team near by you Bryce, I am happy for you. I have a feeling that he will lose a bit of his magic though going from the jail-break type structure of the Cheetahs to one of the most structured in the Waratahs.
I hope he won’t but its possible.
I think the Cheetahs are sunk next year without the Super. He was the spark.
Why didn’t Coetzee strategize with the Saracen coach prior to the match with the Crusaders? Cheetahs did and they shut down SBW worse than Obama without a teleprompter. Of course Crusaders are a better team but the Cheetahs were legend for their awful Defense prior to the Crusader encounter and they played the game of their season defensively.

Really… Josh Strauss missed more tackles in the S15 out of all the loose-forwards barring Ashley Johnson… as for his off-loads… rubbish… they were woeful too…
I’m not knocking the kid… but you guys are too mesmorised by his awesome beard and performance in a shite team…
Deysel makes sense within everything I stated above…
And I stand by what I said about Pretorius…
I’d rather have Vermaak the hero in the historic draw agains the Lions over both McLeod and Pretorius…
BUT THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ANOTHER 9 in the squad!

As for the Tah’s quip… their backs have been some of the most exciting in the competition for YEARS!
July 6th, 2011 at 12:58 pm
If the Tahs can get a guy like Burgess to have his best season ever… I can only imagine what they can do with Sarel…
July 6th, 2011 at 3:01 pm
Did Strauss miss the most tackles or have the highest missed percentage? Big difference.

Maybe he means your stats source.
July 7th, 2011 at 5:12 am
My stats source is a mate that provides the Sydney Morning Herald and Rugbyheaven with all theirs…
He has emailed me the top 20 players stats in almost every aspect of the Super Rugby up until the Semi’s…
Will copy and paste them later…
Japies that made the highest number of missed tackles in the overall T20 were in order
Sarel Pretorius- the worst in the comp (48)
Ashley Johnson- the 3rd worst in the comp (44)
Sias Ebersohn- 38
Bjorn Basson- 37
Robert Ebersohn- 36
Victor Matfield- 34
Pierre Spies- 32
Josh Strauss- 31
It must be noted that I removed both Matfield and Spies from the above as they also made the T20 for ‘most tackles made’ and bar Olivier, along with Stegman and Morne made far more tackles than any other RSA player which brings their hit/miss ratio right up with their insane work-rate…
So as one can see above unsurprisingly the Cheetahs were absolutely WOEFUL on defence!
And Basson must have been targeted and rightly so as no other wing made the list!
I wonder if some are starting to see the bigger picture in light of a RWC… I doubt it?
July 7th, 2011 at 5:22 am
Morne Steyn averages top 2 (leading in many) for most points scored in the comp, most conversions, most kicking metres, most drop-goals, made more tackles than any other 10, was in the T20 for most try-assists and in the T20 for most line-break assists.
Hookers ruled the turnovers (which kind of null and voids the old ‘fetcher’ theory) and all first 6 places were hookers with BDP the best in the comp with 48… Habana was 10th on that list the highest by any winger…
Anyways busy busy… will put the total lists up later once they’re in a easier format to Cn’P!
July 7th, 2011 at 5:30 am
Just quickly what is shocking is that the Japie players rank nowhere in the pick-and-drive stats (Sharks used to dominate these)… only Minnie is in there from memory right down the list!
July 7th, 2011 at 11:44 am
How many tackles were made? Missed tackles means nothing if you dont show how many he made. Same applies to van der merwe, slot by bulle. When he was at the cheetahs nothing happened, then moved to bulls and got a springbok cap
July 7th, 2011 at 11:48 am
Again both ebersohns has extremely high work rates together with johnson so. Johnson
July 7th, 2011 at 2:32 pm
Reply to bryce_shark_in_oz @ 5:30 am:
Easy answer to that:
The Japie players can only do one thing
at a time. They can pick, they can drive,
they cannot pick and drive.

I’ve given you the T20 for tackles made and tackles missed… simply look at the figure for the 20th best tackler and then do the math… you’ll get a very good idea how crap Sarel and Johnson are at tackling!
July 8th, 2011 at 5:47 am
Reply to gsp27 @ 11:48 am:
Actually Johnson’s work-rate is not that high… he runs a fair bit with ball in hand (but so does Burger)… yet he ranks nowhere else in defensive stakes like, tackles, turnovers, pilfers etc…
So you guys are totally incorrect… methinks it’s just that he gets noticed more with that affro and ball-in-hand…
It’s the same reason guys do not notice the Matfields as they are doing the dirty work… and then you look at the stats for the game and realise just how huge his work-rate has been!
July 8th, 2011 at 8:41 am
Okey bryce what about the two ebersohns especially Robert. See where i am going. The fact that i am trying to make is that tackles missed is not the only criteria one should look at. I know Sarel is not the best defender but then again he is everywhere and because of that he goes for far more than your regular guy would! Did not know Johnson had such bad tackling ability.
