MTN Golden Lions coach John Mitchell has made three changes to the team that beat the Leopards last weekend for the Currie Cup match against the Blue Bulls at Loftus on Saturday.

Lions Rugby

Scrumhalf Jano Vermaak, who on Wednesday announced that he will be leaving the Lions at the end of the season to move to the Bulls, was not considered for Sarturday’s match and is replaced by Michael Bondesio with Rudy Paige on the bench. In a total reshuffle of the halfbacks Elton Jantjies returns from the Springbok squad to start in place of Burton Francis.

Up front, JC Janse van Rensburg returns to the starting side after warming the bench for the past two matches following injury. He takes over at loosehead from Pat Cilliers.

Josh Strauss will lead the team again as Doppies la Grange has not recovered sufficiently from a hamstring strain to be considered.

Fullback Jaco Taute is also back from injury and starts off the bench where Cilliers replaces Van Rensburg following the latter’s promotion to the starting side.

Lions Team:

15 Michael Killian, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Lionel Mapoe, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (capt.), 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.

    Also would not play him.

I am really upset by this move from Jano.

It should be JT but sadly Jano’s conduct was not. He agreed with Lions to not negotiate with anyone until after the CC but decided to do so right now without the union knowing. Thats unprofessional.

Yeah its pisspoor by Jano, I agree. But shit if I were him Id also be very tired of staying with a hopeless team, that plays with a full superrugby squad, but still struggles to beat the leopards. 36 all with ten minutes remaining.

So was it in the ‘spirit’ of tthe game, what the **** ever that is these days, no it wasnt. Do I blame him for it? Hell no.
