The MTN Lions have made three changes following on their away win against the Bulls this past weekend to maintain their unbeaten run in Currie Cup 2011.
Despite the news of Janno Vermaak’s defection the Lions have been able to name a powerful lineup for their clash against the Cheetahs this weekend.
In line with Lions policy Vermaak has been released with immediate effect and Michael Bondesio has taken over at 9. But the only changes that are forced are at the back where Waylon Murray’s injury has been assessed as a season ending one, resulting in John Mitchell taking a massive gamble as he has moved Lionel Mapoe into the 13 berth, bringing in Jaco Taute at 15 and shifting the increasingly good Michael Killian to the wing.

Well I think I ruined my chances of a certain doctor being my group leader for a doctorate…
Not my fault she doesn’t know military history and failed rigorous cross examination…
Imagine going into a bush… like proper veldt… find the nearest koppie… put 40kilos of loose equipment in your hands, round your neck, hooked over your shoulders whatever… now hike to the top of the said slippery sloped hill.
Now look for the spot with the most grass and trees, proceed to cut down the trees (not chop, that could damage your site) with a pruning scissors, next use a weed cutter to cut down all the grass till you have an empty piece of sand… use a trowel and a “skoppie” to sweep away thge sand 10cm at a time… have a time limit of seven days… oh and try not to step on anything that could be valuable… do this in 31′C heat…
I will never work in a garden again…
And I’ve already booked for next year!

The type my wife did was limited to a spot (or Tell),
they very carefully dig down the different layers, mark
each little chip of pottery etc. they find.
It then gets indexed.
Try and get yourself a place on a UNISA team and
get to experience the genuine thing in Israel.

Highly doubt it. Mapoe did a sterling job when Waylon went off.
Bondesio also did very well for his first start. All in all a good team selection. I expect it to be a cracker of game and the Lions should get home with a bonus point try.
Also Dawie the Lions have signed the Aussie U/21 scrummie, a Saffer by birth.

Our team uncovered a full Venda hut as used by female royalty called a Makhadzi or “King’s first sister” together with beads, pot shards and hair pins, all dating our site at about 1850 – 1865… our team uncovered the best preserved hut.

Eddie has come through the Aus Schools system not too mention the ARU Elite squad since U16′s and played every Aus age group and here’s the irony… has been billed as Luke Burgess’ heir at the Waratahs!
So RSA loses Sarel to the Tahs… the Lions snaffle one of their brightest youngsters…
I saw him in the U20 RWC… he’s every bit as nuggety as Sarel and Kockott, with an awesome pass not too mention he’s usually the first choice goal-kicker for his sides…
Excellent signing… oh and as an aside… still eligible for the Japies despite coming through Aus schools and Elite squads…

Well done Lions, keep up the good work.
Mapoe is good on defense and Hollenabch is a lot better than most think but will have their work cut out with South Africa’s best centre REbersholm.
I used to support Problems, hooped jersey an all. Now they are play boring kak rugby. Gone are the days of the scoring tries let alone scoring backline tries.
To me South Africa should play rugby league, we are the closests in style and game plan than any other union playing nation.
Bash bash kick n chase. Big boofheads on the crash ball instead of skill.

GLRU sign Varsity Cup star and junior Wallaby scrumhalf
August 10 – The CEO of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, Manie Reyneke, has confirmed that Maties hooker Callie Visagie and Australia Under-20 scrumhalf Eddie Bredenhann have been signed by the GLRU from 2012.
“They are both outstanding young talents, and contracting Callie and Eddie achieves a dual purpose for the Lions: we get quality players to improve our depth, and at the same time we have made an investment in the future of our union,” Reyneke said.
** Visagie was the 2011 Varsity Cup Player of the Tournament and captained the FNB Maties in the 2011 Varsity Cup. He is a highly-rated, tough hooker and has told the website varsitycup.co.za that the move to the Lions is an opportunity he wants to take with both hands. Earlier in the season he turned down an opportunity to play for the Stormers and Western Province due to his study commitments when he was approached with a contract.
He has signed a two-year contract with the Lions.
The 23-year-old former Paarl Boys’ High scholar has not played any rugby this season since a Varsity Cup-ending shoulder injury against the Ikeys on March 7, and has since been operated to fix the shoulder. He has been undergoing rehabilitation and will be fit for next season – and his dream of playing Super Rugby and Currie Cup rugby.
** Bredenhann, who has a dual passport, is a big scrumhalf (91kg) who represented the Australian Under-20 side at the Junior World Cup in Italy this year. He plays for Sydney University Rugby Union Football Club, and as a member of the Waratahs Academy was regarded as the possible successor to Wallabies scrumhalf Luke Burgess at the Waratahs Super Rugby team.
The decision to play for the Lions is indeed a big one for the 20-year-old. The former Australian schoolboy scrumhalf, who rates his greatest moment as being in the side that beat the New Zealand school side in 2008, is eligible to play international rugby for both Australia and South Africa – and the decision to join the Lions could be a watershed decision where he wants to try and play international rugby.

Targeted site based on oral tradition.
Luckily our recce team made a visit first because the oral tradition people got it all wrong side of the hill. The teams on the other side effed it up royally whilst we hit the motherlode.
Limpopo Province, about 40 km from Louis Trichardt.
History has the Boers helpfully interfering with powerful Venda king making powerplays by using Tsonga auxiliaries to destroy one of the king Machado’s (who didn’t like the white settlers) primary supporters at Mogoro as an example to others… it worked.
Our side of the hill we uncovered the hill of a noblewoman called a “Makhadzi” or King’s Fisrt Sister which had wall rubble showing clear signs of having been burned down and collapsing right in line with contemporary pictures drawn by Alexander Struben, an English explorer who was in the region at the time. Our find corroborated Struben’s version as opposed to that of Venda oral tradition which had the siege from the opposite side of the hill. Anyway our find was the first ever clearly demarcated Venda hut from the late Iron Age in Africa. It was a beautiful find. We even found colored Letaba era pots which were broken and abandoned when the Vendas surrendered and got enslaved.

The Lions seems to have money. We haven’t heard any more on the new equity partner but a source of money must have been found. I am very surprised with Bredenhann’s move. Why would he give up Sydney and the Tah’s to move to Joburg of all the places he could have gone to? That tells me there is something strong brewing at the Lions that we are not yet aware of.

Callie Visagie is a very good prospect. The problem for him is that he’ll be standing behind Maku in the queue, and Edgar Marutlulle is a very good prospect already in the squad. Both are black and good enough to be selected on merit. I therefore am not sure about the thinking that went into this one.

Although I was speaking to a Rebels player yesterday (that did not go to Bath on the development tour)… and he said Eddie wants to be a Wallaby and is more than likely going to experience his country of birth (after many years away) and get CC and Super experience before returning?
As an aside… he also said Eddie is a ‘scratch’ golfer…
