The Springboks on Tuesday made five changes to the starting line-up for their Rugby World Cup Pool D match against Southern African neighbours Namibia at North Harbour Stadium, Auckland, on Thursday.
Wing Gio Aplon, scrumhalf Francois Hougaard, utility forward Willem Alberts and tighthead prop CJ van der Linde were all given their first starts of the tournament while Bryan Habana was recalled from injury to resume in the No 11 jersey.
Four players were unavailable for selection due to injury, while Springbok coach Peter de Villiers opted to bring in fresh legs in the hope of sustaining the team’s momentum. Locks Victor Matfield and Johann Muller, centre Jean de Villiers and flyhalf Butch James were not considered for the match.
Scrumhalf Fourie du Preez and flanker Heinrich Brüssow both dropped to the bench while wings JP Pietersen and Odwa Ndungane and tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis were rested all together. In one other change on the bench, Chiliboy Ralepelle was included in a match 22 for the first time when he was drafted in for Bismarck du Plessis, who is also rested.
Thursday’s match kicks off at 20h00 (10h00 SA time).

Standings:
9 Points – South Africa (still have to play Namibia and Samoa)
6 Points – Samoa (still have to play Fiji and South Africa)
5 Points – Wales (still have to play Fiji and Namibia)
Up until the point where Peter de Villiers can throw the Samoa game, the following would have happened:
Wales: They won’t lose against Namibia. They are currently sitting on 5 points. A win is 4 or 5 points. They will sit on 9 or 10 points. 10 points is the likely place they will be at prior to SA vs Samoa.
Samoa: Will win against Fiji. They will sit at 10 or 11 points. Likely to be at 11 points prior to SA vs Samoa.
South Africa: Will win by 5 points against Namibia. (or at least they have to if they want to throw SA vs Samoa).
Standings prior to SA vs Samoa.
14 Points – South Africa
11 Points – Samoa
10 Points – Wales (still have to play Fiji)
Outcomes (ignoring drawn game):
Remember if the points are tied for two teams, the winner of the game between the teams go through to playoffs.
-South Africa beats Samoa by any margin: SA through to play Australia, Wales play Ireland after they see off Fiji.
-South Africa loses to Samoa by more than 7 points and less than 4 tries: South Africa will go through to play Ireland unless Wales can beat Fiji with a bonus point.
-South Africa lose by less than 7 points and less than 4 tries: If Samoa get 4 tries then South Africa will place second in the pool and will play Ireland. If Samoa don’t get 4 tries then all three teams will be on 15 points (in all likelihood). In that event it will come down to points difference. This is a risky outcome for all the teams but I think South Africa will probably top the table then, and play Aus.
-South Africa lose by less than 7, and also get 4 tries. This basically implies that Samoa will also have 4 tries. This puts SA in second place and Samoa in first place. SA vs Ireland. Samoa vs Aus.
-South Africa lose by more than 7 points, after getting 4 tries. This puts SA on 15 points, and Samoa on 16. If Wales get up to 15 points (their maximum), they are still eliminated. SA vs Ireland. Samoa vs Aus.
The main point here is that Samoa and South Africa can get enough points in the end, that Wales can’t even reach the Quarter Finals.
To play Ireland, South Africa have to get one bonus point from this game. The safest would be to just get 4 tries and then throw some intercepts or something and lose to Samoa. Another way would be to lose by less than 7 points, but that can backfire.
I didn’t double check all the math and I know I left out some outcomes, but I think the point still stands. If P Divvy is shrewd he can get a 2007 run for South Africa.
EDIT: Another thing to take in to account. One of the last pool games is Ireland vs Italy. If Ireland lose this match they can still be overtaken by Australia, which will revert their pool to what was expected. 1. Aus 2. Ireland.
Would Ireland lose on purpose if they see that South Africa threw their game?
If they beat Italy as is expected:
QF: South Africa
SF: England/France
Final: New Zealand/Australia
If they lose against Italy:
QF: Samoa
SF: New Zealand
Final: Australia/Sprinboks

Smit shoudl play 1st 20 mins to wear down opp hooker

All the players who have not had a 80 minute run need to play against the minnows. This is less about continuity and more about fatique and options.
No player should tour the RWC without starting a full 80 minute game.
I think the Bok camp has some divisions: Bismarck is on the outs. I think he has been side lined.
Every time the camers went to the Bok’s box Rasputan and Pdiddy were like two teenagers chatting each other up. Muir been the unwanted 3rd party in the middle.
P.S. Habadonna will score against our great neighbours and be the hero once again and get selected.
