Boks call on heavyweights for Samoa

John Smit has moved to the bench while Frans Steyn retains the number 12 jersey ahead of Jean de Villiers.

Victor Matfield will captain the Springbok team to play Samoa in the deciding Rugby World Cup Pool D clash at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland on Friday.

Matfield returns from a hamstring strain – after a two-match absence – as one of seven changes to the team that defeated Namibia 87-0 at the same venue on Thursday.

He assumes the captaincy in place of John Smit, who drops to the bench, in a pre-planned move to allow Bismarck du Plessis to start his first match of the tournament.

The Springboks need at least one point from the match to be sure of qualifying for the quarterfinals.

There are five changes in the pack as Du Plessis is partnered with the returning Tendai Mtawarira and brother Jannie du Plessis in an all-Sharks front row. The final change among the forwards sees the return of Heinrich Brüssow to the back row.

Bakkies Botha was unavailable for selection after injuring a hamstring against Namibia but the remaining four forwards (Smit, CJ van der Linde, Gurthrö Steenkamp, Willem Alberts) all drop to the bench.

JP Pietersen and Fourie du Preez return to the starting line-up among the back division while the versatile Francois Hougaard drops to the bench where he is joined by the fit-again Jean de Villiers as the two backline replacements in a 5/2 split on the bench.

Friday’s match kicks off at 20h30 (09h30 SA time).

    Well well well

Clearest indication yet that JDV has lost his starting lineup spot at twelve and I actually think they’ve made a good call there.

21st consecutive test for Morne Steyn gives an indication of how tough a character he is …. management have really played him into the ground IMO… at Boks and the Bulls… his continued performance and racking up of points should be an indication of the dude’s class and stamina… but still gets second guessed…

I hope FDuP will give him enough good ball to play with…

This side is WAY too strong for the Samoans…

Looks like we’re waltzing with the Matildas in the play offs quarter final…

Shields will now be excreting huge droplets of precum into his underpants at the slavering prospect of having the Bokke knocked out in the quarter finals so he can gloat happily about having “told you so!” basking in the glee of rightness… whilst old Boer will finally be proven right about exactly how kak these Bokke really are despite hiding away all their deficiencies…

    Hmmmm

Think Bryce will be interested to see a third fetcher on the bench with Alberts as utility… so the Bokke have done both… selected a full front row AND two loose forwards… the only mistake on the bench IMO is De Villiers

As far as I can see our strongest side would have been

    Swap Beast for Guthro
    Swap Bis with Johnno
    Daniesaur replaces Alberts
    Bakkies replaces Daniesaur
And on the bench JDiv gets replaced with Butch

This way we cover more and we have efectively THREE hardcore loosies to flood the breakdowns with in Flo and Bis and Daniesaur… Butch also offers more options than JDeV

You dont play Samoa with a FrEEState( Swing the baLL @ aLL cost) backline- You might win but the House oDDs for an upset sides wiFF the Samoans.

You play them FUGLY, seriously FUGLY as the houseoDDs then wiLL favour you.

The “fineprint” for that is a PACK that can dominate, can be “replenished” from da Bench and a Flyhalf( and a 9) that can dictate and slot his kicks, and a backline that can tackle( OK nobody is afraid of our tackling and we do lack the Chiropractor Mentality, but it is the best defensive line we have there).

With the two backs selected that can cover aLL positions( EISH Just hope JPP doesnt get injured in the first 25) it lOOks to me like a seriously competent team for some seriAAs trench warfare!

As a former loose forward there is nothing better than creaming some champagne sparkly backline b***tch into the ground or hard up against the body that his teeth snap onto his tongue with an audible crack and his breath “ooommmppphhs” out of his body…. I particularly loved doing that to windgat scrummies trying a blindside break early in the game… it usually ensured the blindside was safe as houses for the rest of the match because even the blindside wing was not so sure he wanted to have a go for the rest of the game…

Cannot agree more, simply nothing better than a solid tackle! Back, forward, prop halfie – solank hy net val, en hard! Ask Morné about the obscure art of ‘delayed tackling’…net so dat die ref nie fluitjie blaas of met jou wil gesels nie, maar hy twyfel, en die getékkelde opponent is liederlik die m**r in oor die ‘laatloop’!!!

    Army

    5 Sig v Sein Formasie

Some Craven Week played for Sein Formasie…. 10… changed direction off the back of the scrum … sort of glided into my path…

It was the perfect hit… even knocked my breath out… somehow in the fall he knocked the ball on and twisted my wrist back ripping ligaments (only realized afterwards)… he had blood coming out of his mouth and his breaths were coming in these high pitched wheezes like a teenage slut approaching orgasm… it was a thing of beauty

In High School there was this giant wing from Elspark Tegnies… skinny bastard who kept beating us for pace out wide and once I crossed behind my wing and this character swerved in to step Henning and I was just at the right spot at the right time… side on into the ribs… he just lay there and they stopped the game cos they thought I’d killed him… had hit him right in the solar plexus… he had the teeth snapping stop…

In primary school against Concordia it was 6-4 with like 2 minutes to play and they had a five meter penalty and they had this massive prop (who is now a client of mine – I was in Concordia first before going to Baanbreker so I knew him) who charged our line — their one try had come by similar means but I was having none of it… I charged this character and hit his legs… he went down split the ball forward and all seven his forwards fell onto me and him… I left the field because I was winded but the whistle went within about twenty seconds afterwards and we had cleared our line. Our coach reckoned it was the best tackle he’d ever seen…

    Hmmm… we’re better heroes when we’re kids…

Moelikste posisie as alles in ag geneem word, bly scrummie vir my ek moet se.

    Wat was jou moeilikste?

    Morne

    Moeilikste posisie was losskakel.

Senter was vir my die lekkerste. Dit is hoekom ek so heftig reageer

    Samoa is going to last
    as fkn usual,
for about 25 to 30 minutes and then concentrate
    on individual tackles.
    Ja-ja.

    we fluffed for several years
    at the trinations.
    Get a grip.
The world cup is only starting
and we are looking like sluggers.
Lets hope that backline can start firing.
Or rather pray they can tackle, pass and read the game
    by a divine miracle,
otherwise old piet is coming home early.

My worry is a repeat of 95 RWC when Samoa and one dirty pig fullback deliberately targeted our star players with high late shots. Joubert was the recipient of these swinging arms.

Not one Samoan player was cited or carded. One of the most disgraceful days in world rugby.

I hope the Boks smash them off the park. Bit long to hold a grudge but fok it.

Back-line running rugby is beautiful but is only possible when you dominate or when the opposing defense is poor.

In competitive games it is not a good strategy in itself. Rather it is the result of good strategy.
