Lion squad for Stormers game on Friday

The Lions have named their team for the DHL pre-season warm up.

John Mitchell has named his strongest possible squad for the warm up against the Stormers, but has enlarged it to 26.

Of the starting XV only newcomer from the Griquas, and off season lock signing Hendrik Roodt, does not have super rugby experience. Elton Jantjes was not considered because of his injury rehabilitation. Similarly Bok prop CJ Van Der Linde is still a few weeks away from readiness.

The team is:

15. Jaco Taute 14. Deon Van Rensburg 13. Lionel Mapoe 12. Doppies La Grange 11. Michael Killian 10. Butch James 9. Michael Bondesio 8. Warren Whiteley 7. Josh Strauss (C) 6. Derrick Minnie 5. Franco Van Der Merwe 4. Hendrik Roodt 3. Patric Cilliers 2 Bandisa Maku 1. JC Van Rensburg

Reserves are Callie Visagie, Caylib Oosthuizen, Jacobie Adriaanse, Stephan Greef, Ruan Venter, Cobus Grobbelaar, Doppies Le Roux, Anhtony Volminc, Dylan Des Fountain, James Kamana, Andries Coetzee.

  1. Hmmm

You can now see how thin the Lions are on the ground…

For their sake one hopes their players can last the tournament.

Mitchell has revealed that the players on the bench for this game are the fringe players for the squad so guys who would be called up and drafted in case of an injury disaster.

  2. Note that Strauss has been switched to 7.
This allows Whiteley to be a third lock option which one can understand.

It actually shows Mitchell is being very careful about opening up options in the side for a long season.

Strauss has always been 7 (other than the odd game at 8)… and he doesn’t need Whiteley at lock when he needs to give his two specialist lock youngsters in Botha and Greef… who are on the bench some game-time…

See he’s scored the powerful Maties captain and hooker from the Stormers too… very well done!

And Doppies Le Roux is that massive unit 7/8 from Puma’s… could be a find too…
