Even if just for the supporters on the other left-side of the Orange River, tonight is the game everyone was waiting for in this year’s Varsity Cup as Maties will host their neighbours Ikeys at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.
For the Maties supporters you can even look forward to see this on Supersport if you cannot make it to the sold out stadium. Â Maties is the only unbeaten team thus-far in the competition while UCT will be fighting for what remains a very slim chance to make the semi-finals.
“It’s going to be a big, big game and UCT will very psyched to pick up a win in Stellenbosch,” said Maties head coach Chean Roux. “I don’t care what’s happened up till now – UCT will be well up for this match… it’s going to be a lekker one!”
UCT went from heroes last season to zero’s this season as they won six trophies including a first ever local club title in 37 years.
“Our results haven’t been good this year, it doesn’t take a genius to work it out, but I really don’t think we’re playing that badly – it’s just a few things letting us down at the moment”
Two teams that will keep a close eye on this game are UJ and Tuks. They are second and third on the table and a loss from Maties tonight will benefit them the most. UJ and Tuks are arguably the best two teams in the competition at this stage and would like to have both semi-finals up in the north rather than to travel or play each other.
UJ travel to Potch to face Pukke. Â Â A win for Pukke tonight will all but assure them the fourth semi-final spot, but it can also throw the cat amongst the pigeons for other teams in their aspirations to get a home semi-final.
Shimlas will play TUT in Bloemfontein to hopefully end their four-game losing streak. TUT is fighting to get out of the automatic promotion relegation zone. For that they have to win tonight and next week against Madibaz but that is a big ask for a team who could not register a win yet this year.
Maties and UCT will maybe grab all the headlines in Round Six but there will be something to gain or lose for every team on the games tonight.
Predictions:
- Shimlas vs. TUT – Easy…..Shimlas by Fingy(Plenty)
- Maties vs UCT – Difficult one but will go with home team and my teamJMaties by 10
- Tuks MNNU- Tuks by 30 points will be too good for MNNU
- Pukke vs. UJ – I can see a surprise here with Pukke by 5
You can follow the games on Supersport or on www.ruggaworld.com and www.twitter.com/ruggaworld
