SA rugby will today announce a number of appointments within its organization, but none more important than Heyneke Meyer’s coaching team.
It has been known for some time that Meyer had his eyes on many individuals of his former coaching team at the Bulls – a fact confirmed in the press release from SA Rugby on Friday which stated that the Blue Bulls Company and SA Rugby had agreed that it (SA Rugby) may ‘negotiate’ with four members under contract at the Bulls.
These four candidates are most likely, Johann van Graan (forwards coach), John McFarland (defense coach), Ricardo Loubscher (backline coach) & Bazil Carzis (fitness coach).
JJ Harmse writing for the Rapport believes it is also likely that there will be clarity on the future role of former Western Province Director of Rugby, Rassie Erasmus’ future with the Springboks and SA Rugby.
The big surprise however may come when Meyer announces his captain of choice for the 3-test incoming tour of the English in June where the Rapport newspaper speculated that the name of Victor Matfield may be read out.
Matfield who retired at the end of 2011 is still involved at the Bulls as a line out consultant where according to Harmse, is still in tip-top shape taking part in drills and various practice sessions. The relationship between Meyer and Matfield is well known where he (Meyer) said that Matfield will be involved in his Springbok coaching team as line out consultant.
It now seems that Matfield’s role may extend beyond that of a consultant to come out of retirement and lead Meyer’s Boks.
If Meyer cannot convince SA Rugby or Matfield to take the captain’s armband the most likely candidate next in line is Fourie du Preez who currently plays his rugby in Japan.
The announcement on the Springbok assistants appointments will be made today (Sunday) at 16:00 in Pretoria
