Not so effective anymore, tackle like shit and ref’s blowing him and poopcock out of the game now…

Still right at the top of the tackle count stats, in the pilfers and unlike some of the other open-siders (and pilferers)… he’s not giving away as many PK’s…
He just needs to show his linking play and speed more (which he has)…

Nope my mistake… he’s still up there in the PK’s conceded…

I got the distinct impression that the “fetcher” role is outdated. All players must be fetchers now.
Was Jake a prophet before his time?

Reply to bryce_in_oz @ 11:58 am: look don,t get me wrong in the right game he is ruling but the way refs look at the breakdown, he needs to change the way he play

Yep…
He offers so much more but if he’s ‘only’ playing the breakdown he stifles his other skills too…
Brumbies pack has been an excellent example… although they have one of the best open-siders around in Hooper… they aren’t pigeon-holed into just being a ‘open-sider’ or a ‘blind-sider’ or a ‘ball player’ etc etc… they the situation that arises… and that includes all their forwards…

Heyneke Meyer said it even before Jake…
Heyneke claimed that in SA your centers need to be your primary fetchers ands in Aus / NZ you needed your wings to be primary fetchers…

Jake transposed this strength into the 2004 Boks and that is why De Wet Barry was at 12… he tackled hard and he was in 2004 the top leading ball pilferer for the Bokke… everyone was lauding Schalk as an opensider though…

Schalk was no.6 purely because Juan Smith was a better no. 7. He never was a pilferer, and I still consider him an “afkop hoener”.
I’ll probably be accused of blatant subjectiveness, but Schalk will not be in my prime 15, not even 22, as I would rather bench a loosie/lock.
Schalk is a very visible player. That and his physical approach is his main attributes. Like the dog chasing the car ……

In 2004 it was his mal blonde kop everyone saw which is why he got the accolades.
In the meantime lowly “The Law” turned over the most ball for the Boks to play with…
