Francois Steyn has signed a 3-year contract with the Sharks.
According to the Sharks official website, Steyn has put pen to paper and will re-assume his playing career with the coastal franchise from July 1st.
The Sharks were unable to confirm the facts until such time as all logistics were finalised. Rudolf Straeuli, Rugby Commercial Manager for The Sharks stated, “I am pleased that we are able to assist SARFU in bringing back international star players such as Steyn and have him back playing rugby at Mr Price KINGS PARK. I am certain all our supporters will be delighted to see him wearing the black and white jersey once again.”
Steyn will join The Sharks officially from 1 July, 2012. The Sharks CEO, Brian van Zyl added, “The present focus is on depth and ability to actively compete in every position in the squad so we are delighted to have Francois back with us to provide that strength in our backline, not to mention his accurate boot.”
In terms of the team dynamic, Sharks coach John Plumtree, agrees he has much to contribute, saying: “It is great to have him back with us as we did miss him. He was definitely an influential player when he left and he will again be that, so it is fantastic to have him with The Sharks.”
Unfortunately given the SANZAR rules on player eligibility for the play-off’s, Frans will not be able to take part in the 6-team play-off stages of Super Rugby should the Sharks progress to that stage. It is however more than likely that Frans will feature for the Springboks in the incoming Castle test series against England at some stage.

Giddy-up…

I just hope Heyneke Meyer is prepared for Shit-Eastern storm from Cape Town if he picks Steyn over de Villiers.
May 28th, 2012 at 8:32 pm
Now we will see Fransie fuckup his acreer again at the sharks who will play him every week in another position because they have an idiot for a coach…..worse mistake for him to have gone back to them should have gone to Bulls, I predict by end of year he will play the same shit as before he left for France
Stupid

Metro lost in the QF this weekend – good news for the bokke
PS: He played 15 in the QF

Where do you think he should play for the Boks?
May 28th, 2012 at 9:25 pm
Reply to JT_BOKBEFOK! @ 8:33 pm: He will play 10,12,13 and 15 at the sharks
May 28th, 2012 at 9:29 pm
Reply to Timeo @ 9:24 pm: HM will play Jean at 12 and Think Frans will play 15 for Boks although I do not like Zain he is playing well with Bulls feeding into the line nice, kick well and safe under high ball 80% of the time

Reply to Jacques(Bunny) @ 9:29 pm:
Kircher works fine for the Bulls but I think just about every other 15 plus a few others should be ahead of him in the Bok line-up.
In order: Lambie, Steyn, Daniler, Pietersen, Aplon, Taute, Viljoen.
May 28th, 2012 at 10:15 pm
I’d certainly prefer Tina @ 12, and Lambie @ 15.
I see Steyn in the role of Jaques Fourie, organising the defensive line for the boks.
May 28th, 2012 at 10:21 pm
Reply to Timeo @ 9:51 pm: Consistancy plays a big part in Boks selection, Lambie, Daniler, Pieterse, Aplon and Viljoen can not put two weeks together, Taute is my man but then will HM go with a player who is new with International rugby? I do not think he will not now.
May 28th, 2012 at 10:22 pm
If we talk about attacking player you can only look at Zane and Taute the rest plays Snor rugby
May 28th, 2012 at 10:24 pm
I believe HM will look at:
15 Frans
14 Basson
13 Meisiekind
12 Jean
11 Habs
10 Morne
9 Hougie
He will try young players from the sideline

Then do you play de Villiers at 13?
If not who?
I also like Steyn at 12 but de Villiers is too good, too experienced to left out.
9 de Preez
10 Steyn
11 Habana
12 Steyn
13 de Villiers
14 Pietersen
15 Lambie
There are no real stand-out at 13 and rather play the older experienced guy out of position than one of the younger ones.

With that back line the only way Habana, Basson and Frans Steyn will ever see the ball is when England kick it towards him.
May 28th, 2012 at 11:10 pm
Reply to Timeo @ 10:58 pm:
That is most likely the back line that will play, and I also prefer de Villiers at 13, Meisiekind has a hair appointment anyway so won’t be able to make it.

Fab 5 Freddy – Frank Steyn – Jordaan – JPP
Like it.
Sharks set to start cooking with gas.
May 29th, 2012 at 4:27 am
If I were a punting man (cough cough)… I foresee Franny replacing Jacque Fourie whilst JDV is here for the short turnaround Eng Tests… or they will switch and there’s a chance he’ll play 15…
If we had a decent 13 (which only JDJ fills that role) I’d still like to see him at 15 where that boot adds a whole other dimension to opposition planning…
Bench dynamics and politics also going to play a part… thank goodness Beast is back to form… so it’s just going to be the tough decision of how to include Aplon, Habana, JPP, Mvovu, JDJ, Basson as well as Lambie (and perhaps some roughies like JP and Taute) in the backline mix too…
Cannot see them being able to afford a 5/2 mix with so many backs and potentially FDP back?
The solution would be real simple really… scrap these Nth/Sth window dressing games and like Aus and NZ play your ‘A’ side in those same locations….

Freddy is leaving after this season and Frans will only play any games before and not including a possible play-off berth…

Reply to Timeo @ 8:20 pm: Pfft where do you come up with that crap? Bulls supporter?
Reply to biltongbek @ 10:58 pm: whahahaha, come we all know its the coaches game plan that decides the kicking.
With Steyn at 15 his long boot punishes you for any kick that does not go out but at 12 he offers so much too, especailly now he knows how to offload.
JDV or Totie at 13.
Basson, Habadonna hmmm same same.
Lets hope there are no injuries.
I would have Keegan as captain but never a backline player, except scrumhalf.

Reply to Kevin_rack @ 5:02 am:
Keegan Daniels like many in the S15 playing good rugby albeit sporadicly (he’s had some shockers) … is and never will be test quality… he’s simply too light-weight despite his abilities… he’d get murdered despite his heart…

Reply to Timeo @ 9:24 pm:
IMO at 12, he is a better option there than JdV.
May 29th, 2012 at 6:56 am
Back-line should be:
9. Hougie
10. MSteyn
11. Habs
12. FSteyn
13. JdV
14. JPP
15. Lambie
Ruan and de Jongh on the bench which leaves a spot for an extra forward.
May 29th, 2012 at 7:44 am
9. hougie – Should be a wing.
10. MSteyn – Can’t wait till The Goose puts him to bed.
11. Habs – Last go round? Best defending wing of all time?
12. FSteyn – Nothing to add but “BadAss”
13. JDV – Wing on his outside will NEVER get ball but better than at 12 and it ain’t like he’s passing to Messerschmitt Willie so who cares.
14. JPP – Dig him. Just no Bassoon or Ndungane – Please.
15. Lambie – That blondie 15 from stormers must be hurt cuz that dude deserves it. Can’t see Meyer not going with Side-Show Bob Kirchner – he’d just be more comfortable with him – I’m sure you understand.

More than likely if no FDP… everything changes there…
I’d be surprised if Aplon is left out for JDJ…
Reply to Americano @ 7:44 am:
Basson is the best finisher in RSA currently and arguably one of the best wings in the air…
JT- I still think Lambie (or Joe Pietersen) are the best options off bench… cover for Morne, 12 and 15… no need for another back but your 9…
May 29th, 2012 at 7:55 am
None of us would be playing this guessing game if the monkeys at SARU had played a mid-week Bok ‘A’ side… the second and third choice 10′s could play, 13′s could be tested… another loose-forward combo tried… youngsters touted as incumbents like Etzebeth, Coenie and co put through the paces… and then a few experienced guys thrown in the mix…
And this game could have been played in the current areas that farce of a North and South club games are being played…
When England was last here 2 yrs ago they played a Aus ‘A’ side which Deans used as a normal coach would to blood youngsters and experience alike… and they punished the Poms…
May 29th, 2012 at 7:55 am
Lammetjie is the new RSA goldenboy maybe he must also go and play in UK to learn rugby away from sharks, weird but few months ago everyone was saying he is better than morne now he is the best 15 we have?
May 29th, 2012 at 8:01 am
Reply to Jacques(Bunny) @ 7:55 am:
In fairness he has already showed big BMT at test level… and is extremely grounded…
My only real gripe is that he appears to lack pace…
Did you see how Aplon (albeit he’s a speedster supreme) almost jovially looked over his shoulder in 3rd gear whilst Lambie was over-revving in 5th?
May 29th, 2012 at 8:51 am
Bryce -
Basson had his shot at test level and he blew it. I don’t quibble with your rating him on form currently. I just think he’s a S15 belle of the ball and that’s where the carriage stops for Bjororno. At test level he disappears after messing his pants.
May 29th, 2012 at 8:57 am
Reply to bryce_in_oz @ 8:01 am: That’s why I like the play of Zane, he gets well into the line with speed, I think he is amoung the top try scores in the super rugby this year and all are by joining the line like Juba did in years gone by, he is not bad in the air, and so so with defence, but what 15 in RSA is good in defense these days.
I do think with HM setup Zane will be great. I like Joe but during the S15 all teams are always hammering him in the air because he is small.
A bit off one from this side one from that one for me on 15. Midmield is about combinations and I believe HM will do just that, so do not be suprise to see Flakhaas De Jong with Jean their, or maybe Meisiekind.
May 29th, 2012 at 8:59 am
I have come to accpet that Meyer will be conservative for the June tests as he has litle time to prepare the players.
I would like to see that he thinks carefully about putting de Villiers at 12. When you consider the impact Frans Steyn had in the RWC at 12 with Jaque Fourie outside him, it got us over the gain line and with Jaque running onto the crash ball it made all the difference.
I don’t care for a Fourie du Preez, Morne Steyn combination at 9 and 10, but the reality is it is most likely going to happen.
For that purpose we MUST have Frans at 12, at least for the purpose of distributing the ball past the 12 channel.
Jean de Villiers can take over the role of Jaque Fourie and run hard onto the offload.

Too quick to judge mate… the guys been capped 5 times and most being off the bench…
He’s not my first choice winger (and I don’t believe in a specialist wing on the bench unless the team is laden with utilities)… but if there are injuries he ups the pecking list…
I haven’t seen a single RSA player that can power through the Chiefs speedsters from a standing start this season…

I’ve no real qualms with Kirchner there… not my first choice but he’s solid, experienced, conditioned, needs to back himself on attack at test level though but he’s no real play-maker despite his great stats currently (on tries and try-assists)… but there are so many vying for the position…
May 29th, 2012 at 10:00 am
Reply to bryce_in_oz @ 9:35 am: Then you didn’t see Goosen, Piet v Zyl for the cheetahs, or Lambie for the Sharks?

We forget Robert Ebersholm.
Shock horror he is no good. He makes that great running rugby side, yes we do have one, work.
Stats (lies, bloody lies and stats) please LOL
Tim Whitehead, Strauss, Venter…?
That Cheeaths scrum half is pretty strong boy. One to watch.

From a standing start against the two big Kiwi Fijians with no room to move… I very much doubt it… Willie has been excellent on the fly in saying that…
Lambie… could beat Jamie MacKintosh from a standing start I'm afraid… he's got everything but speed… Aplon absolutely smoked him this weekend without even changing gears…
Basson's defence has improved… Willie tackles like the rest of the Cheetah's backs ie they don't… and Basson has no peer in the air…
Of course Le Roux is white also… with the above said he will not be playing for the Boks this year… and I've got no problem with that… which brings me back to where is the mid-week Bok 'A' game against England?
I wouldn't be surprised to see Hougaard shifted out there on a whim…
The only white winf
