Jean de Villiers has been appointed as Springbok captain for the remainder of the 2012 season, Bok coach Heyneke Meyer announced in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.

De Villiers was appointed the 54th Springbok captain before the international season started, but initially only for the Castle Incoming Tour against England.

Meyer decided to hand the captaincy to the most experienced Springbok centre ever for the remaining nine Tests of the year.

“Jean had established himself as a brilliant leader and ambassador for the Springboks and South African rugby in the last two weeks,” said Meyer.

“He leads the team with distinction on and off the field and gained respect, not just from his team mates and the management team, but also from the media, public, sponsors and other stake holders.

“We have built up an awesome working relationship based on trust, integrity and loyalty, which is why I decided to make him the captain for the rest of the year.”

De Villiers, who led the Boks to victories in the first two Tests against England, said he was very grateful for the trust shown in him.

“The experience thus far has been unbelievable and humbling and I’ve really enjoyed the environment created by Heyneke Meyer,” said De Villiers.

“It’s easy working with this team and the help that I’ve received from the other senior players has made my job so much easier.

“I’m looking forward to working with them for the rest of the year and hopefully we can grow as a team and reach our goal of becoming number one in the world.”

So he’s proved his worth as captain
    AND player.
HM and the guys on the field should
    know.

Never had anything to prove for mine as either…

The big question is the length of this season, back-up options as both captain and centre combo’s…

I just cannot foresee Bismark as the cappie… and whilst happy with Franny and JDV at centre I’d like to see decent back-up plans for the future…

Reply to bryce_in_oz @ 3:31 pm: Jip would like to see his log term plan with the Boks don’t think Jean will be their in a year from now…maybe he will surprise us…..Would like to see some young leader being identify to take this team forward as captain.

One thing we can say about HM is that he is consistent in selection(what he believe in) and who he trust in. Can not really argue with that.

Can not wait to see the Boks take on the Oz Mob this year, I think that is were HM will show his real hand in selections and what he wants from players for the future.

Yep he’s definitely assembled his 42 man squad and won’t be afraid to add U20′s and any other form players IMO… nor exclude non-performing players…

Captain for next year will come with the territory… I’d expect it’s JDV and perhaps Schalk whilst a youngster develops…

Definitely going to be good to see how they do against the Wallabies… I’d like to see the Boks retaining their home ground advantage against them at least…
