Grey celebrates founder’s 200th birthday in style

On invitation by Grey College the Toyota Free State Cheetahs will be playing against Cardiff Blues on Saturday, the 4th of August on the main field at Grey College.  The game will be played in memory of Sir George Grey, founder of Grey College, who would have been 200 years old this year.

Mr. Harold Verster, Managing Director of the Free State Cheetahs (Pty) Ltd. is excited about the prospects of the game and said:  “This is a wonderful opportunity to pay respect to Grey College for their huge contribution to rugby in the Free State and South Africa and for bringing international rugby to Bloemfontein.”

The match promoter, Willem Strauss said that Cardiff Blues has confirmed that their players, who represented Wales in their recent tour to Australia, will be included in the touring team to South Africa. The Wales captain, Sam Warburton will also be leading the Cardiff Blues team against the Toyota Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.  Two of the Blues’ injured superstars, the British Lions centre Jamie Roberts and the former All Blacks eighth man, Xavier Rush will accompany the team on the tour.

“It brings great joy to us to be hosting this special game during this year when we celebrate the 200th anniversary of our founder, Sir George Grey’ birthday,” said Mr. Johan Volsteedt, Principal of Grey College.

In one of the main curtain raisers of the day, Grey’s first team will be in action against their peers form Kearsney College in KwaZulu Natal. In other matches Toyota Free State Cheetahs u.21 will play against the Border u.21 team and the Toyota Free State Cheetahs u.19 will take on SWD’s u19′s team. Grey’s u.13 team will be playing against an u.13 Invitation team.  .

Tickets for the game are R60 for adults and R20 for scholars and students.

The Grey College Player of the Millennium will be announced at a Gala Dinner on Friday, 3 August. Gareth Edwards, the IRB’s Player of the Millennium will also attend this function. No fewer than seven former Grey College learners played for the Springboks in the recent Test series against England.  Frans Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Flip van der Merwe, Adriaan Strauss and Coenie Oosthuizen were all attended school at Grey College.
