Vodacom Bulls winger Bjorn Basson underwent surgery in New Zealand on Sunday after he sustained a tear to his intestines during his side’s 28-13 loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday.
Basson was forced off the field during the first half of the play-off match, the third injury the visitors sustained in the opening forty minutes.
He was operated upon at 03h00 Sunday morning (NZ time).
Basson will remain in hospital for at least another five days and will have to stay in New Zealand for five more days before he will be able to fly long haul, Blue Bulls Company CEO Barend van Graan confirmed on Sunday.
“Our team doctor, Org Strauss, stayed behind to look after Bjorn when the rest of the squad departed for home via Sydney,” Van Graan confirmed.
“We have informed his wife of his injury which will keep him off the field for at least six weeks.”
The Bulls will arrive back in Johannesburg on Monday at 16h15.
Medical updates will be provided as they become available.

Hard luck Bjorn. At the game we noted how the Bulls wings engage in aerial combat for the ball during the kick and chase they love so much. The guy next to me remarked how risky this is to both to the receiver and the chaser and after a collision in the first half he noted how long Basson was down for before apparently electing to stay on the field. I would like to ask whether one of the army of waterboys and medics that surge onto the field at these Superugby games is the team doctor? They are all miked up and no doubt conveying instructions from the coach but you would hope that someone with good knowledge of sporting injuries was advising Bjorn whether to stay on because he sure looked like he wanted off.

I am just amazed that we do not have more injuries in todays game
Gute besserung Bjorn!
My pet peeve is the amount of players getting wrestled to ground from rucks and mauls in a headlock! Someone is going to get injured badly at this level if this keeps on happening! IMO the referees should penalize any headlock no matter the situation – the players will correct themselves very quickly!
