Peter de Villiers made a winning start to his Varsity Shield career as his FNB UWC hammered FNB TUT 42-4 in their opening match of this year’s Varsity Shield.

UWC woke up in the second half to score 40 points with no answer from the Vikings. The Vikings made the most of possession and territory in the first 40 but could not convert that into points.

Peter De Villiers admitted in pre-season that he has a lot to do to make UWC an outfit that cannot just win one or two big games in a season but win them consistently in the competition. De Villiers said that he has identified that there was more to change off the field than on it for his players to succeed.

If the first week is anything to go on then Peter de Villiers will be making a big difference in these youngsters life’s and hopefully we will see them filtering through into Currie Cup, Super Rugby and maybe even Springboks.

In other Varsity Shield news up north UKZN Impi recorded a 19-7 victory over FNB Fort Hare Blues in Pietermaritzburg. The Impi’s had to endure sopping weather and a committed Blues side to claim their first victory of the season.

On Thursday we will see FNB CUT take on FNB UWC and FNB TUT battle FNB UKZN.

I have always thought Peter will be great as a development coach, meaning younger players not “development” in a South African sense.

I must have missed it at some stage, how does scoring in Varsity games work that one is able to score 4 points?

Reply to Craven @ 10:59 am:

Penalties only count 2 points, not 3. Tries, 6 points, not 5.
