In week 4 the Currie Cup 2013 came alive with much better performances all round in the three Premiere League games over the weekend. With a try festival in all three matches over the weekend no supporter can complain that the Currie Cup was dead.
In the three matches we saw a total of nineteen tries. We had two controversial TMO decisions and a new log leader.
Friday 30 August: Lions 31, WP 31
On Friday evening the WP team came up to the Highveld to take on the Lions at Ellis Park. WP start the game almost if the devil himself was chasing them and pulled quickly away from the Lions with two quick tries in the first 15 min to lead the Lions 15-0. Marnitz Boshoff put the first Lions points on the board with a penalty but WP reply five minutes later with their third try by Tiaan Liebenberg.
The Lions got their first try through Helberg five minutes from half time. This was just an omen for things to come in the second half from the Lions.
The home side opened the second half with a controversial penalty try after TMO Willie Roos ruled De Allende had prevented a try from being scored in the left corner. De Allende dived in to stop the ball from being grounded, but Roos was the only person in the stadium who thought a ruck had formed on the tryline. De Allende was also yellow carded for the offence.
The Lions seemed to get a new life with the penalty try and scored two more tries in the second half to lead WP for the first time in the game. Coleman kept Province in the game with a few penalty’s and had to slot over a last minute effort to escape with a draw.
Tries: Deon Helberg, penalty try, Elton Jantjies, Derick Minnie.
Conversions: Marnitz Boshoff (4). Penalty: Boshoff.
Tries: Damian de Allende, Cheslin Kolbe, Tiaan Liebenberg.
Conversions: Kurt Coleman (2). Penalties: Coleman (4).
Saturday 31 August: Cheetahs 40, Griquas 20
Cheetahs got back on their winning ways on Saturday when they overcome the onslaught from their neighbors Griquas at home. Griquas started off with a bang and put a few phases together. They received a penalty for a cheetah’s infringement. The cheetahs got on the board through the boot of Riaan Smith, but Scheepers answered back with a penalty of its own to give the lead back to Griquas.
Cheetahs started to play some attacking rugby and was rewarded with a try by Boom Prinsloo. Rhule extend their lead when he scored two minute before the break. The Cheetahs went over the white wash one more time through Prinsloo second try. The Cheetahs scored their bonus points try in the 47 min through Watts. The Griquas came back with a try of their own through Rocco Jansen.
The big talking point was the biting incident of Griquas try scorer Rory Arnold. The TMO advice that he could see a bite from Arnold and referee was forced to red card Arnold and give a penalty on the half way line for the cheetahs. The cheetahs took control of the match after the card and score another try.
Free State Cheetahs:
Tries: Boom Prinsloo (2), Raymond Rhule, Elgar Watts, Kevin Luiters
Conversions: Riaan Smit (2), Watts
Penalties: Smit, Watts (2)
Tries: Rocco Jansen, Rory Arnold
Conversions: Nico Scheepers (2)
Penalties: Scheepers (2)
Saturday 31 August: Sharks 34, Blue Bulls 18
The Sharks put some more misery on the Blue Bulls Currie Cup campaign with a convincing 34-18 win on Saturday. The Blue Bulls was first to score with winger Akona Ndungane crossing over from a brilliant backline move. SP Marais, Heimar Williams, Charl McLeod and Marco Wentzel were all on the scoresheet to join a faultless kicking display by Fred Zeilinga as the Sharks moved above the Cheetahs and Western Province to the summit.
The Blue Bulls are falling behind with only one win, one draw and two losses to show for their four matches played. I got the feeling throughout the game that the Blue Bulls kicked a lot of ball away which the Sharks was just too happy to capitalize on. Next week will be another hard test for the men from Pretoria as the Cheetahs comes to visit Loftus.
Tries: SP Marais, Heimar Williams, Charl McLeod, Marco Wentzel
Conversions: Fred Zeilinga (4)
Penalties: Zeilinga (2)
Tries: Akona Ndungane (2)
Conversion: Handre Pollard
Penalties: Pollard (2)
Next week Currie Cup Matches:
Blue Bulls versus Cheetahs
Western Province versus Sharks
Griquas versus Lions
