Their was a lot of discussions on showing matches live over the internet free of charge to countries which do not have bought the rights to matches.
New Zeeland Rugby Union have experiment with broadcasting between the All Blacks and Australia last weekend on You Tube. They have reach 22 000 viewers on the match which was a great step in the right direction in bringing the game to all people. The Dunedin Test was made available free to viewers in 45 countries in which it had not already been sold to broadcasters, including the United States and Italy.
The viewership was impacted by only go ahead with the decision to broadcast on the Friday before the game.
Tew said “technically it worked very well. The quality was really good and it was an opportunity to test a different way to deliver our top product.”
Let’s hope that this is the way Rugby Unions will look in expanding the game in the future to all walks of live.
