Cape Town – On Sunday, 19 January 2014, DHL Express Africa along with DHL Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club sparked the revival of the legendary Clifton Beach Challenge. The day saw two of the company’s sponsored teams – DHL Stormers and DHL Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club – compete in a friendly game of touch rugby and flag contest.

The original Clifton Challenge was an amazingly popular annual event that ran for 20 years.

“To highlight the recent DHL sponsorship of Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club, we decided to recreate the legendary touch rugby game between the DHL Stormers and DHL Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club. We also decided to include a corporate league and a friendly game between the DHL Clifton Surf Lifesaving Young Guns and the South African Rugby Legends as a curtain raiser for the main event. We wanted to make sure that the crowd had a real fun day out – that’s what it’s all about” said, Managing Director of DHL Express Africa, Charles Brewer.

The day attracted a large crowd who took part in beach activities and fun giveaways whilst cheering on their favourite teams. The DHL Stormers were in high spirits on this summer’s day with Juan de Jongh once again celebrating every DHL Stormers try with the now infamous Gangnam style routine!

“Of course, there’s a more serious side to the DHL Clifton Challenge and that is Delivering Safety to the areas beaches” Brewer continued. The DHL Clifton Challenge offered the opportunity to educate the public on the role that DHL Clifton Surf Lifesaving plays on a day-to-day basis in keeping Clifton beach visitors safe.

“Hopefully this will be the start of bringing in our, much younger lifeguards to this ‘challenge’ and become once again, an annual event that will prove to many that Lifeguards are not just a bunch of sun, sea and tans – they are passionate, skilled and committed specialists who are ready at any moment to ‘save a life’ when required to do so” said Marc Truss, DHL Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club Chairman.

DHL is in the 4th year of a fantastic partnership with DHL Western Province rugby Football Union and in its 2nd year of the DHL Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club sponsorship programme.

At the end of the day, the Allan Grey team won the corporate section of the challenge. The DHL Stormers walked away as the champions of the 2014 DHL Clifton Challenge against the DHL Clifton Young Guns touch rugby team with a final score of 2-0. No doubt that the gauntlet has been laid for 2015 – Challenge accepted!
