Springbok lock Victor Matfield is not expected feature for the Bulls in their upcoming Super Rugby tour to Australasia.

The Bulls leave for New Zealand on Tuesday and according to the Beeld website, Matfield will revert to his coaching role as forward and attack coach for the duration of the overseas trip.

The men from Pretoria will play matches against the Hurricanes, Highlanders, Waratahs and Western Force.

The decision is part of the original plan for Matfield to be managed during the season.

Flip van der Merwe will return to take over the captaincy while Matfield will only be used if there is an injury, in order to keep him fresh for when they return home.

Paul Willemse is expected to be Van der Merwe’s lock partner against the Hurricanes in Napier on Saturday (kick-off 08:35 SA time).

Grant Hattingh is the other lock in the squad, while Jacques du Plessis can also be utilised there if need be.

    Was about to ask if anyone knows about this. But apparently it isnt a late April fools joke. We need him so much, his presence makes a huge difference. If they wanted to manage him, a couple of home games where the Loftus faithfull would help us, would’ve been the way to go, not a tour with an inexperienced team. Full of hope Im going to trust the brains trust on this one. GO BULLS!

    Who else thinks Paul Willemse looks like Krynauw Otto…

    Damn he was a big loss to the Lions…

    Wonder what happened to Ruan Venter his lock mate who went to the Cape… probably dead ended his career as one sees in the Cape with imports…

    Paul Willemse does resemble Krynauw Otto in looks as well as play. He is certainly a lock to be looked after. Plays hard but doesnt get to involved in the off the ball stuff. Really like him. With Matfield not playing, he and Flip would probably team up, but neither of them is a 5 lock. Hopefully Flip grows into the role very well, as that is one position the Boks are shy off in SA

    @DavidS: @Jacques(Bunny):
    You guys are confusing Ruan Botha and Ruan Venter. Ruan Botha was Willemse’s lock partner at the baby Boks and junior Lions. Botha is at he Stormers now and played a few games for them so far this year. He is out injured at the moment.

    Ruan Venter is on loan from the Lions to the Pumas. Like Willemse he plays as a nr 4 lock, but has had a very bad run with injuries and has not played much the last few years.

    Willemse is very talented, he actually reminds me of Kobus Wiese as well.

    What to do on superbru? Go with my heart and go Bulls? Or go with the brain and say Hurricanes? Then again over the last few seasons the Bulls has tasted success against the Hurricanes when touring there. What to do?
