Is swak keurwerk of laat ontwikkeling die rede dat so baie Springbokke nie Cravenweekspelers is nie?

Pale Toe! Maroelamedia

Johan Ackerman, Heini Adams, Eddie Andrews, Keith Andrews, Gio Aplon, Anton Barnard, De Wet Barry, Bjorn Basson, Albie Bates, Paul Bayvel, Colin Beck, Christo Bezuidenhout, Nick Bezuidenhout, Robbie Blair, Selborne Boome, BJ Botha, Darius Botha, Gerrie Britz, Warren Brosnihan, Craig Burden, Robert Cockrell, Danie Coetzee, Marcell Coetzee, Peter Cronjé, Quinton Davids, Craig Davidson, Johan de Bruyn, Thinus Delport, Chris Dirks, Tim Dlulane, Michael du Plessis, Morné du Plessis, Piet du Plessis, Tommy du Plessis, Hempies du Toit, Pierre Edwards, Frans Erasmus, Kulu Ferreira, Kabamba Floors, Bevin Fortuin, Adrian Garvey, Gerrie Germishuys, Bryan Habana, Dean Hall, Ronnie Hill, Henry Honiball, François Hougaard, Niel Hugo, Daan Human, Butch James, Theo Jansen van Rensburg, Gavin Johnson, André Joubert, Marius Joubert, Willie Kahts, Deon Kayser, Juandré Kruger, Johan le Roux, Martiens le Roux, Deon Lotter, Ricardo Loubscher, François Louw, Martiens Louw, Ian Macdonald, Adolf Malan, Robert Markram, Ian McCallum, Roy McCallum, Charl McLeod, Louis Moolman, Ray Mordt, Gerhard Mostert, Brent Moyle, Dick Muir, Johann Muller, Odwa Ndungane, Owen Nkumane, Jongi Nokwe, Theo Oosthuizen, Deon Oosthuysen, Krynauw Otto, Gavin Passens, Breyton Paulse, Gysie Pienaar, Barend Pieterse, Ronnie Potgieter, Richard Prentis, André Pretorius, Jaco Pretorius, Piet Pretorius, Kevin Putt, Harry Roberts, Chris Rogers, Chris Rossouw, Danie Rossouw, Pieter Rossouw, Johan Roux, Wessel Roux, Dale Santon, Hendro Scholtz, Divan Serfontein, Hanyani Shimange, FC Smit, Juan Smith, Jackie Snyman, Gerrie Sonnekus, Johan Spies, Rampie Stander, Willem Stapelberg, Johan Steenekamp, Christian Stewart, Johan Strauss, Peter Swanson, Gary Teichmann, Dawie Theron, Errol Tobias, Johnny Trytsman, Solly Tyibilika, Lukas van Biljon, Derek van den Berg, Johan van der Schyff, Cabous van der Westhuizen, Piet van Deventer, Moaner van Heerden, Dan van Zyl, André Venter, Riaan Viljoen, John Villet, Peter Whipp, Kobus Wiese.

  2. @Boertjie:

This is an interesting subject. A couple of thoughts to munch on:

If we split High Performance pathway players (when you are part of any of the elite or SA Rugby squads such as the U16 Green Squad, SA Schools team or SA U20) against those who become Springboks through SARU competitions (like the Vodacom Cup, Currie Cup and Super Rugby) you have a 40/60 split – with the 60 attributed to competitions and not the high performance pathway (this is for the current Bok squad including the wider group).

The other very important aspect to consider is that the high performance team at SARU who picks these squads only get to see the players at the Craven Weeks for the first time (or second if they play in more than one like U16 and U18).

Their pathway to these weeks are determined by each union’s development department/program as they select who will go to Craven Week.

One of the biggest issues currently and historically is that each union play their own ‘type’ of competitions at various age groups (some play contact from U6 others only at U9, some play 15’s others 7’s or 10’s) so there is no national guideline or prescription. The effect this has is that what SARU selectors look for in players for high performance squads are not the same thing the provincial selectors for these national weeks look for.

Another, very vital aspect to consider, which shocked me a bit, is that of all school coaches (from U6 to U18), only around 30% has any sort of rugby qualification – and here I am talking about something as simple as an IRB 1 certification or even just attending and completing a rugby workshop (such as what Jake White did before he left for Oz).

The result is our kids are only exposed to structured and focused coaching at the age of 16 IF they make the U16 national squad.

  3. People may be well meaning, but their actions are mostly governed by interests and incentives.

The interest of members of selection committees is, to serve their constituents. They have very little incentive to select the best team.

The same as in the amateur days when the Bok team was selected by a committee.

I see Moaner van Heerden was overlooked, but his little brother and son was not.
Gysie Pienaar – overlooked, Ruan Pienaar not.
If your father or grandfather was a Bok you are also less likely to be overlooked.
