Young rugby players to represent Crusaders

Six young rugby players from throughout the Crusaders region will fly the flag for their provincial union at the Investec Super Rugby semi-final on Saturday night.

The Crusaders have selected a registered junior player from each of the provincial unions that make up the Crusaders region through a Facebook competition run in the lead up to the semi-final.   Each winner will receive tickets to the game for themselves and a parent/guardian, a behind-the-scenes tour of AMI Stadium, the chance to watch the teams warm-up from the sideline, and will get to be a flag bearer as the Crusaders run onto the field.

Crusaders CEO Hamish Riach said the provincial unions are at the heart of the Crusaders and this is a way of acknowledging their contribution.

“The Crusaders made a decision when NZ Rugby renewed our licence in 2012 that we wanted rugby to continue to own rugby. That is why we came up with a structure that puts the ownership of the Crusaders in the hands of the six provincial unions within our catchment – Canterbury, Tasman, South Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, Buller and West Coast,” Mr Riach said.

“It is really important to us that each of these provincial unions feel a strong connection to their Super Rugby team, and it will be great to see them all represented as the Crusaders players run out on Saturday night.”

The winners of the competition are:

Canterbury Eruera Ingle 10 Christchurch RFC Under 10 Silver
Mid Canterbury Will Lemon 8 Methven RFC Under 8s
South Canterbury Hayden Kerr 11 Timaru Celtic RFC Under 11s
Tasman Jamie Hampson 9 Stoke RFC Red Under 9s
Buller Anna Casey 11 White Star RFC Under 12s
West Coast Connor Greig 9 Wests RFC Under 10s
