The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd is pleased to announce the signings of Adriaan Strauss, Trevor Nyakane, Pieter Labuschagne and Jamba Ulengo.

Bulls CC

All three forwards will join the Vodacom Bulls on November 1st, 2014, while Ulengo has already started training with the Vodacom Blue Bulls.

Springbok hooker Strauss, who captained the Toyota Cheetahs in recent seasons, was South Africa’s Vodacom Super Rugby Player of the Year in 2013 and returns to Loftus Versfeld, where he made his Vodacom Super Rugby career in 2006 after a seven year absence. He has signed a two year deal.

Strauss was a member of the Vodacom Blue Bulls squad that shared the Absa Currie Cup in 2006 and the Toyota Free State side that won it the next year. He became a Springbok in 2008 and has played 34 times for South Africa (with 5 tries). He is also the Toyota Cheetahs’ most experienced player with 97 caps, (added to the eight Vodacom Bulls caps).

Springbok prop Nyakane has signed with the Vodacom Bulls and Vodacom Blue Bulls till October 2017, Springbok squad member Labuschagne signed till the end of October 2016 as did Springbok Sevens flyer Ulengo.

The 25 year old Nyakane, who was first spotted as a youngster playing for the Limpopo Blue Bulls at Craven Week, made his provincial debut for the Toyota Free State in 2011, his Vodacom Super Rugby debut for the Toyota Cheetahs in 2012 and his Springbok debut in 2013. He has played four tests and scored one try in his international career this far.

Pretoria-born Labuschagne also came through the ranks at the Free State, having represented the union at school boy, junior and senior level, as well as playing Vodacom Super Rugby for the central franchise. The 25-year old was part of the Springbok training group in 2013, but injuries in 2014 prevented him from pushing for higher honours.

Ulengo was a regular on the IRB Sevens World Series circuit, having played for the Springbok Sevens team since 2012. He is also a former Toyota Free State age group and Absa Currie Cup player.

BBC’s High Performance manager, Xander Janse van Rensburg also confirmed the extension of their current contracts of the Kriel twins, Dan and Jesse, till 2016.

“We are pretty excited about these signings as all of them are proven performers at the highest level,” Janse van Rensburg said.

“These players are all very keen to share in our vision of becoming the number one team in both Super Rugby and Currie Cup and to help us achieving those milestones. These are important and significant signings, as they show that we are still seen as a pathway to international honours and the winning of tournaments and cups by established, as well as emerging players,” Janse van Rensburg said.

“The decision of Adriaan to join us will not also add depth to our hooking position, but with his extensive role as captain, will also provide fantastic leadership and solid international experience.”

Vodacom Bulls and Vodacom Blue Bulls head coach Frans Ludeke was also very pleased to have them on board.

“We believe all of these guys will contribute significantly to our effort and vision to be a team of excellence. They will also add to potential shortcomings we have identified in our structures and I am looking forward working with players of their calibre.”

    Great news for Cheetahs. Strauss was a passenger last year & captain at that.

    I never rated him – but what do I know? He has the odd good game (selfs blinde hoender pik soms mieliepit raak), but tend to loaf outside of rucks and knows no other play then trying to charge over opponents. Looked good since we have no decent hookers really to compare against. Will fit in perfectly at the Abattoir!

    @Americano:

    I beg to differ… in 2013 Strauss was a regular on the team-of-the-week sheets in Aus and NZ… and one of the main reasons they had the best season in their history…

    And wait for it… do you know why he quit the Cheetahs?

    Not money… no…

    But the Free State Union refused his requests this year into an independant enquiry into why things are so rotten in their union…

    Exactly what has been needed for eons now…

    “Adriaan Strauss left the Cheetahs because they wouldn’t agree to an independent investigation into their rugby.”

    “the breakdown in negotiations is said to have surrounded a clause involving an independent investigation into Cheetahs rugby. While Strauss had advocated that a fresh perspective was required to move the team forward, the move was refused by the Cheetahs.”

    @bryce_in_oz:

    Sad to read that Bryce, and yet the powers that be at the Cheetahs will just huddle a little closer and pretend nothing is wrong.

    After this I have to wonder how long guys like Willie and Lood will stick around? They could probably pick which province they want to play for.

    @Craven:

    For sure… and under HM it does not have to be in RSA…

    Bryce,
    I meant last year as in 2014. After this season for the FunBunch – I definitely view it through the rear view mirror.
    2013 he was a stud no doubt. 2014 he was a dud straight up & he was captain.
    Cheetahs shocked all in 2013 & got to the playoffs. 2014 they obviously returned to the mean but even still….they beat ZeeBulls for first time ever.
    Cheetahs get a hard time for their performance, but their margin of error given cash on hand is very small. That’s probably why they play so devil may care offensively, put on a show.
    I’m always surprised at the heat Cheetahs get for their performance given their means & the economic oppression the other big $ teams put on them – look no further than ZeeBulls stealing half their squad.
    Cheetahs are always gonna be an insurgency 2013 was a surprise. 2014 not so much.

    The entire pack was bad….& who captained the pack & the team for that matter?
    Always amazed how he got away scot free from the dirty stick that was always waved at NakaDrotske or The Goose for being hurt or Willie missing a tackle after some NZ’er from Tarawa or some other atoll juked or ran over the entire team before he had his chance….
    The stunt he chose to do says everything. Yeah kid you want us to investigate ourselves – Rightttt….See how that goes over at ZeeBulls. Adios Strauss you hero you.

    Spot on Americano! For such a poor player he is amazingly arrogant. Now if Super Will demands that, it will be different hehe! We should then drag Tatta Tutu from his euthanasia thinktank and re-open the Cheetah TRC!!
