Sharks edge 14-man Griquas

The Cell C Sharks found it hard work to get pass a passionate GWK Griquas team who played with 14 men for more than three quarters of the game with 31-24.

The Griquas looked full of running from the start of the game and took the lead with a penalty early in the game. The game was turned on his head with Francke getting a red card for a tip tackle.

The card was justified as it was dangerous but surely the power in rugby needs to relook at a different way to punish red card offences. To play 14 men against 15 take the contest right out of the spectacle that is rugby. A few suggestions that was made in the Super Sport Studio was to send the players off the field but get a replacement on and punish him afterwards with a straight 4 or 5 weeks suspension. Whatever is decided we need to re-look at this law.

With fourteen men against them the Sharks still struggled to get into gear but slowly got control of the game and score their first try through Zeilinga going over after a pass the referee said ‘drifted’ forward, even though it went forward by at least five metres.

Paul Jordaan got the Sharks second try just before half time through brilliant play for a half time score of 18-3.

In the second half the Griquas showed allot of heart and determination and did most of the play. Through brilliant work from the hard working Marnus Schoeman Griquas scored their first try of the match to take the score to 21-10. The Sharks hit back immediately with a try through a brilliant pass from Zeilinga  who put Sibusiso Sithole away for his first try of the game and the Sharks third.

This took the score to 28-10 for the Sharks. With just over 15 minutes remaining Carel Greeff worked his way over in the right corner for Griquas and took the score to 28-17 for the Sharks.

Griquas kept the pressure on the Sharks and with 1 minute on the clock a kick from Brummer was brilliantly gathered by Arendse that too the score to 28-24 for the Sharks with seconds to go.

Zeilinga restart the game and it was the Sharks who got the final points in the game with a penalty from Zeilinga, making the final score 31-24.

Great game from Griquas and one should wonder what the outcome would have been if they did not lose Francke with a red card.
