Western Province hosted the Golden Lions at Newlands and ran out winners by 27 points to 14, the top of the table clash was supposed to herald the favourites to take the Currie Cup trophy at the end of the season but lost some of its shine with the Lions losing captain Warren Whiteley to the Springboks and having to play centre Stokkies Hanekom at flyhalf.

There were 3 tries scored in the first half, first Kobus van Wyk received a clever inside pass from Cheslin Kolbe to score and only 4 minutes later van Wyk collected a horrible clearance kick from Demitri Catrakilis to run 80m and score.

Ruan Combrink then kicked a penalty to get his team on the board before Andries Coetzee received a pass that put him clear of the home defence just a minute before half time.

The second half started with Combrink adding another 3 points, then exchanging penalties with Demitri Catrakilis, the game sort of fizzled out before a stunning linebreak by replacement flyhalf Kurt Coleman set Jaco Taute up for a try to end the game as a contest in the 73rd minute.Coleman added the conversion.

Nizaam Carr was named as official Man of the Match

  1. WP defense was immense, Lions missing Captain fantastic Warren whitely & Bossie no specialized fly half def hampered the Lions. Lions will be back stronger next week! Lions4life

  2. Lions have only themselves to blame for losing this game as they had WP number for most of the game.

Key players not their made the difference and this is something David mentioned earlier in the week already.
