“Slaptjips” to help Namibia in World Cup

Former Bulls backline coach Pieter Rossouw will assist Namibia at this year’s Rugby World Cup in England and Wales.

The former Springbok and Western Province wing recently stepped down from his position at the Bulls to move back to Cape Town.

According to Netwerk24, “Slaptjips” will be Namibia’s backline coach until after the World Cup, with an official announcement expected to be made in due course.

Rossouw, 43, played 43 Tests for the Boks between 1997 and 2003.

This comes after Namibia’s head coach Danie Vermeulen stepped down from his position last week.

His place as head coach will be taken by Phil Davies who was previously the team’s technical advisor.

It is believed that Rossouw’s appointment led to the resignation of Vermeulen, who wanted to appoint a local assistant, but his request was rejected by the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU).

Vermeulen’s resignation comes less than three months before Namibia kick off their World Cup campaign against New Zealand in London on September 24 and just under two weeks before they start a two-match home series against Russia.

Also in their World Cup group are Tonga, Georgia and Argentina.

  1. Unfair. While Pieter is a better coach. This could unsettle the squad and more small details. Unions must not meddle like this.

  2. BC I actually thing it may be good for them to get a guy like Pieter, he has enough experience to help the guys and he is only there until end of WC, consultant if you like like Eddie was fro JW

  3. I have no qualms there. What I worry about is that they get him 3 months short of the WC. Zim had a brilliant guy last year. Went pear shaped. I worry about local player mentality. Hope the Namibians aren’t like my country men.

  4. @Jacques: yes, that’s what I was also told that coach left because of Pieter. One day I will introduce you to a Facebook page which deals with all news Zim rugby. Well worth popcorn and drinks!

  5. @BC – Milner-Skudder: Why of why – “one day”. I for one would LOVE to have a lookin … It is still one of my life-dreams – to be involved with REAL a underdog team and coach the mongrel in them – so they can maul and rip the heart out of ‘fancy-pancy’ favourite teams !!!!!!!!!!!
