Warriors stun Munster

Glasgow Warriors hauled themselves to the top of the tree in Conference A by dispatching Munster Rugby at Scotstoun Stadium.

Both teams had gone into the match with three wins from three in the Guinness PRO14 but inspired by a dauntless display of kicking by Finn Russell, the home side reigned supreme.

It took just four minutes for the hosts to open their account for the evening, with Leonardo Sarto crossing the whitewash, allowing Finn Russell to add the extras.

Russell was again on-target with the boot as he landed a lengthy penalty to make it 10-0 but the visitors then hit back through Rory Scannell, who charged through a forest of bodies to score the Dragons’ first try of the game.

The two teams then refused to allow the other an inch as they went hammer and tong, with a period of parity lasting right up until the 35th minute, when Russell landed another penalty to make it 13-5.

That sparked a late-half Warriors flurry, with Callum Gibbins streaking away and feeding Lee Jones, Russell adding the extras to make it 20-5 at the break.

Five minutes into the second period, Peter Horne and Ruaridh Jackson combined to tee up Nick Grigg, who sealed the hosts’ third try of the game – Russell converted from a spectacularly tight angle to stretch his team’s lead to 22 points.

Glasgow did take their eye off the ball shortly afterwards, with a loose pass allowing Chris Farrell to pick up possession and race away to score but in the 55th minute, Farrell held his nerve again to slot away his third penalty of the game.

With just over 15 minutes to go, Sarto stood strong to hold off a heap of challenges and offload to Scott Cummings to secure a bonus point for Glasgow, Russell adding the extras once more.
