Home Currie Cup 2017 Province back to winning ways

Province back to winning ways

Western Province secured a comprehensive 55-27 bonus-point victory over the Griquas at Newlands in Currie Cup action on Saturday.

The home side scored seven tries, including three match-ending scores late in the second-half after the Griquas picked up a costly yellow card.

George Whitehead slotted a penalty kick for the away side to open the scoring before the mercurial Western Province fly-half Damian Willemse levelled the scored with an effort of his own.

Whitehead landed another three pointer before a 12th minute interception from Griquas winger Ederies Arendse saw him sprint half the length of the field to score. His effort was made even more impressive by the fact that he outsprinted Sevens star Seabelo Senatla before Whitehead converted.

After 19 minutes, WP flanker Cobus Wiese crashed over from five metres out to score a converted try. A powerful line-out drive saw the hosts score again, this time Chad Solomon dotting down from the tail end of the maul. Dillyn Leyds sent a lofted ball to Sevens star Werner Kok in the 33rd minute and Kok did well to beat two remaining defenders to score and make the half-time score read 24-13 to Province.

Kok scored again through a clean break 40 seconds after the restart and secured the home side’s bonus point. Province prop Wilco Louw was then sent to the sin bin for leading into a tackle with his shoulder in the 50th minute.

Griquas scrum-half Renier Botha scored a converted try two minutes later. Dean Muir scored a try for the hosts before Griquas forward Abraham Le Roux was yellow carded.

Following this, WP scored a further 3 tries, including a double for reserve forward Caylib Oosthuizen, and secured an impressive 55-27 victory.
