Griquas keep Currie Cup status

Ederies Arendse scored a hat-trick as Griquas defeated the Griffons 59-26 in their Currie Cup promotion-relegation match in Kimberley on Friday.

The result ensures Griquas will compete in the Currie Cup Premier Division again next year, while back-to-back First Division champions the Griffons will remain in that tournament.

The opening 15 minutes saw the teams locked at 0-0. The Griffons were under pressure from the outset and did well to keep Griquas out for as long as they did, while dominating the scrums.

Sparked into action by their backline, Griquas scored four tries in the first half to lead 26-14, with Arendse grabbing a double.

The hosts were relentless on attack after the break, and it was only desperate defence by the Griffons that kept them away from the tryline.

Scores by No 8 De Wet Kruger and Arendse pushed Griquas out to a commanding 40-14 lead.

Two tries in the space of three minutes for Selvyn Davids, who completed his own hat-trick, gave the Griffons a fighting chance.

But Griquas finished strongly as a flurry of late tries by Wendal Wehr, Tiaan Dorfling and Shaun McDonald completed a convincing win.

Griquas – Tries: Tertius Kruger, Ederies Arendse (3), AJ Coertzen, De-Wet Kruger, Wendal Wehr, Tiaan Dorfling, Shaun McDonald. Conversions: George Whitehead (7).
Griffons – Tries: Selvyn Davids (3), penalty try. Conversions: Jaun Kotzé, Duan Pretorius.
