Kriel going nowhere

2

As usual South African media has nothing better to do than spreading rumors maybe because their is no rugby around to report on.

The newest rumor doing the rounds is that Lions and Springbok Jaco Kriel has signed a contract with Gloucester where his former Lions mentor Johan Ackermann is coaching now.

The report stated that Kriel have signed  a three year deal with the English club. Kriel has signed a two year deal with Japanese club Kubota Spears which will only make him available for Gloucester in 2019

In Touch Sports have quickly responded on twitter that Kriel is committed to the Lions and have signed nothing.

Best solution for supporters is to take not just a little bit of salt, but a lot with what is being reported in the media this next couple of weeks.

Nabetragting – Super Rugby 2017

0

Most of the times we judges our rugby according to what the Springboks did for the year when we actually should looked at it in a whole to see if any progress was made in the year.

From a Springbok view it was yet again a year of going one step forward in June and 5 steps back for the rest of the Springboks year but lets first look at the Super Rugby this year.

We did have three teams again in the play offs but that was also helped by the stupid conference system that the powers at SANZAAR decided on when they brought in the Sunwolves, Jaguares and Kings.

The year also saw Davids taking the Kings to a team who ended 17th in 2016 to 11th in 2017. They ended higher on the log than the Cheetahs and Bulls.

Only one Australian team, the Brumbies, ended up higher on the log than the Kings which has been a huge accomplishment from a team in their second year of Super Rugby.

One good thing that came out this year from SANZAAR was that they have reduced the number of teams in the 2018 season going back to fifteen. That saw the end of the Cheetahs, Kings and Force in Super Rugby.

Still believed SANZAAR should have gone for two leagues like in European Championship with the top 12 playing in the Championship and the rest with expansion into Island countries in the second league.

That would have seen strength v strength which is not just what the fans wants but also would have improved the game as well.

The Lions was again the only real chance for South Africa to win the Super Rugby with the Sharks and Stormers really just making up the numbers.

Their was allot of hope that the Stormers would be doing well this year especially with the way they play against the Chiefs at Newlands and tries like this from them

But it was the Lions that treated us again with their open flow rugby and scoring tries at will which also secured them the top spot at the end of the season ensuring a home Quarter Final and possible home Semi Final and Final.

The Sharks almost upset the apple cart when they faced the Lions in the quarter final with many of Sharks supporters that will still say they were robbed by the referee.

The Lions was the only South African team to go further than the quarter finals and although coming from behind in the Semi Final they still deserved the home final against the Crusaders.

A yellow card in the first half stunned a packed Emirates Airline Park when Kwagga Smith was send of for a dangerous tackle in the air and took away the contest that would have been a great final.

The Lions did stand their ground with fourteen men but a quality side like the Crusaders is difficult enough to take on with fifteen players more so when you have fourteen.

At the end the Lions could yet again not get over that final hurdle and also saw their coach Johan Ackermann leave to coach in England.

It was one of the worst seasons for the Bulls who saw them ending last of the South African teams and 15 over all.

With the Stormers and Sharks it was yet again the case of promising allot but producing a disappointing season with the Cheetahs and Kings making up the numbers.

One thing we do know about Super Rugby every year is that we get super tries being scored in the competition and here are some of it
