Blues surprise Lions in Johannesburg

The Blues surprise the Lions on Saturday as they fought back in the second half to take an impressive win on Saturday with 38-35

As we got used to in the past two years the Lions did not take long to get on the scoreboard as Cronje gave a moster pass to send Mahuza over for the Lions first try.

This came after an unusual knock from Williams which gave the Lions a 7-0 lead after just 2 minutes in the game.

The Blues came back nicely into the game playing in the Lions half of the field and only the Lions defence kept them from scoring.

With the Blues again on attack the Lions intercept a pass to send Rohan Janse van Rensburg over after Jantjies send him on his way.

This gave the Lions a 14-0 lead.

Some concern for Lions came when Warren Whiteley picked up which looked like a knee injury and force him off the field.

The Lions had the better of the ball and territory as they started to dominate the set pieces and it was from some great scrums that they got Jantjies over for their third try.

A mistake just before halftime by the Lions on the ground gave the Blues the opportunity to get their first try and the teams went into the break with the Lions leading 21-10.

Although the second half did not start the Lions way Aphiwe Dyantyi took it upone himself to get over for their first of the second half.

The game opened up with the Blues taking advantage of the Lions mistakes with Ioane scoring two quick tries to make it a 28-24 game with ten minutes to go.

The Lions found their mark again with another power try from their forwards, but the Blues got one back through a mistake from the Lions to make it 35-31 with minutes to go.

With the Blues on attack the Blues kept coming and after the hooter scored their fifth try to take steal the win at the death.

The Lions will be very upset as they let the Blues back into the game with some ordinary mistakes which we are not used to from them.

At the end the Blues deserve the win 38-35 as their first win of the season.

  1. Jis, this result caught me unawares. Could unfortunately not watch the game, so caught up on some highlights yesterday.

From the highlights it seemed like the Lions were taking leaves from Fleck’s Great Book of Defense looking at two of the Blues’ tries. How was the general play in the rest of the game?
