Springbok carrot rating

There was always the hope but in some way we did doubt the Springboks getting a win in the first test against England.

After 18 minutes we were looking at a major hiding but somehow players like Faf de Klerk, Willie Le Roux, Vermeulen and RG Snyman got things going for the Boks to fight back for a memorable win over England.

Here is the ratings for the first test as we saw it…

15. Willie Le Roux (Solid 9)

Willie was inspirational in almost all the tries of the Springboks and his ability to put players in space to score is beyond what we have seen in the last two years.

He is a senior player now in the back three and I think he helped allot with the two new wings to get them back into the game after that horrible start.

Not just a play maker but a game breaker, Americano will be so happy.

Willie gets five carrot

14. S’bu Nkosi (7.5)

Nkosi physical presence was felt throughout the game, He is a winger that has skill, speed and the ability to always get over the advantage line.

He scored two great tries and although his defence was poor in that first quarter of the first half he came good.

Nkosi get 3 carrats

13. Lukhanyo Am (5.5)

Am did not shine as we hoped he would but is combination with De Allende is still new and he was able to keep the midfield solid after that first burst of England.

He made a few handling errors but sure it will be corrected.

Am gets 2 carrots as he still have allot to get right in this setup

12. Damien De Allende (6)

Damien missed some crucial tackles in that first 20 minutes which helped England to build that lead.

He had good strong runs to get over the advantage line and was solid with the kick-offs. Need more from the big man but he did improve through the game

Damien gets also just two carrots

11. Aphiwe Dyantyi (7)

Was also found wanted on defence in that first 20 minutes but this boy has some power and speed.

Was good under the high ball and chased well to put England under pressure. Got a try in his first test which was good to see and was instrumental in Nkosi try.

This wing will only get better.

Dyantyi gets three carrots

10. Handre Pollard (6)

Handre had a nervous start to the game and missed a huge tackle which led to England first try. He struggled to get going but once he did he controlled the game better.

His kicking game was not 100% and he needs to get his goal kicking on par.

His combination with Faf worked because of the brilliant game of Faf.

Handre gets two carrots

9. Faf de Klerk(9.5)

What a brilliant game from the former Lions player. He was absolutely brilliant in all aspects of the match.

It was a hard decision who the man of the match was between him and Willie Le Roux but his game management and pure heart on defence tipped the scale.

He shown us why he is so highly rated in England and the way he took charge of the Boks attack was something we last saw with Fourie du Preez.

I think he made one mistake all game.

Faf gets 6 carrots from me

8. Duane Vermeulen (8)

I was hoping that Thor will bring his A-game and he surely did. He was solid on the ground making it difficult for England and good on defence.

He covert allot for the backs which one expect from a eight-man.

He made some crucial turnovers and his strong runs was great to see again.

Welcome back “Thor”

Vermeulen gets four carrots

7. Jean-Luc du Preez (6)

Du Preez did the hard work and although he did not have the normal strong runs we used to he made the advantage line.

He was good in defence but had a quite game.

Du Preez gets two carrots

6. Siya Kolisi (5.7)

As a captain it would have been hard to pick up your team in your first match as captain with 24-3 down.

He showed is class as a leader and although he did not had the game we want from him he did not disappoint. Made some crucial tackles and did take the ball forward.

We need more from the captain but he was ok.

Kolisi gets two carrots

5. Franco Mostert(7)

What a solid player yet again for the Boks. Mostert is just one of hose players that you want in your team.

He was great at lineouts and worked hard in the set pieces as well.

He always go forward with ball in hand and do the hard work on defence. He is one of those players that do the ugly work but he does it brilliantly.

Mostert gets three carrots

4. RG Snyman(8)

We have found another yster in the second row. Snyman had the perfect start to his international career and everything that people where saying of the man is true.

He commanded the lineouts and his play with ball in hand was brilliant.

He made some massive hits and and was by far the best forward on the park.

Snyman gets four carrots

3. Wilco Louw (5)

Not the best we have seen the big man and is scrummage was also not at it’s best.

He was quite on attack and fade away among the forwards on the day.

Need more from Wilco and he get two carrots

2. Bongi Mbonambi (7.5)

What a surprise from Bongi as many of us and more so me was scared of what he could bring to the team. He has worked hard on his lineouts and had a good night with his locks.

His general play was good and he put the hard hits in on defence as well. Was impressed with his interplay with the backs on attack

Bongi gets 3 carrots

1.Tendia (Beast) Mtawarira (5)

Beast did what was expected but there was no wow factor from the big man in his 99th test.

His scrumming was ok but not brilliant. Next week we need more.

Beast gets two carrots

Man of the Match

Faf De Klerk

  1. Real rugby ratings….come in carrots!

Next week, Messerschmitt-Willie holds court in the
” Vatican of SA Rugby “…..
    Cheetah Field.

  2. lol on sunking. For me, the MoTM was Vermeulen – the guy was fantastic. I was wrong about him and the Boks. A v wise selection from The Messiah.

Faf was v good but I’m going to disagree on one aspect which nearly hurt the Boks on many occasions – his box-kicks are not good and often too slow and get charged down . If he minimised these – v good.

Pollards missed penalties kept England in a he game, but he also nailed some v good ones. It was he (not de Allende) that missed the tackle on Brown.

Our two black wings are fantastic. Aphiwe is not just pace and step but skill (going to be a great). I’m not so sure about Am but that’s a first test – will get better.

Kolisi played bloody well too. Not flashy but hard working.

We did miss etsebeth and Marx (will take Boks to a different level) but the replacements all had good tests. Snyman had a v good break but we do need more oomph and grit at breakdown.

The Messiah and Swys – bloody brilliant.
