FNB Varsity Cup returned for the 2019 season and as we got used to we saw some great rugby in round 1
We saw wins for Pukke, Tuks, UCT and Maties in the first round of matches
FNB NWU (Pukke) were first up against FNB UJ and got an away win with 23-8 at the end.
NWU came out firing and was in control of the match from the start and were on the board within the first five minutes to lead 7-0.
The pack of the Pukke dominated proceedings and they got better as the game progress.
John Hart were yellow carded which made it even easier for the visitors scoring their second try to make the lead 14-0. Pienaar van Niekerk was the man over the line for their second try.
Pukke went into the break with a 14-0 lead.
UJ did get the first points of the second half with a penalty from Cilliers and with their crowd behind them they scored their forst try through Nkomo to make the score 14-8 for NWU.
Pukke hit back through Lungelo Gosa to take Pukke lead to 23-8.
The two teams could not add any more points and Pukke got their first win of the season

After disasters 2018 season FNB Tuks had the perfect start at home to beat FNB CUT 23-6.
The game got off to a slow start and it was the visitors that drew first blood with a penalty.
It almost took the whole of the first half for Tuks to get some points on the board.
Stephan Smit went over the line for their first try and gave Tuks a 8-3 lead at halftime.
Tuks took another 13 minutes in the second half to extend their lead from a try by Dayaram.
CUT got a penalty back but it was Tuks who had the final say with Van Niekerk who scored a seven-point try and gave Tuks a 23-6 win.

FNB Maties was made to work hard for their win at home against FNB Wits.
The scoreline does not tell the full story as Wits was much better than the 16 point loss.
Maties did handle the pressure better and scored some brilliant tries in the match.
Hooker HJ Luus crossed twice, once in each half which helped his side get off to a winning start in their defence of the title.
Maties was put on the backfoot early on when Krappies van den Berg opened the scoring for the visitors.
Maties had to respond quickly and they did just that through Luus first try.
Maties scrumhalf was next to go over after Duncan Saal showed his class in the build up of the try.
Wits hit back with CJ Conradie who was at the end of some slick passing to reduce the lead to 14-12. Maties kicked a penalty over before the end of the half to lead 17-12 at the break.
Maties came out in the second half with some intend and were playing a much tighter game with their forwards.
They hit the scoreboard first with a penalty after which Luus got his second try for Maties.
That gave Maties a 30-12 lead and although Maties looked like they stepped up Wits did not allow them to run away with the match.
Huge credit must go to Maties defence who hold out a few scoring opportunities from the visitors.
Wits did get another unconverted try which made the score 30-17.
Maties added a last penalty for the final score of 33-17.
FNB Maties next face local rivals FNB UCT at the Green Mile while FNB Wits host FNB CUT in Johannesburg.

FNB UCT had to work hard to get a win over FNB UWC at the Green Mile. At the end they got the win over UWC 32-24.
It was a slow start to the match with both teams unable to put any points on the board in the opening quarter.
Tumi Mogoje finally opened the floodgates with a 5-point try backed up with the boot of Darian Hock to put 7 points on the board for the Ikey Tigers.
Just before the break Kurt-Lee Arendse dotted down a 5-pointer, equalising the scores on 7-7 with Lyle Hendricks’ conversion.
UCT manage to score again just before halftime to lead 14-7 at the break.
UCT lost their captain Xaba with an ankle injury, after which UWC level the scores again at 14-14 with Leyds getting over.
UCT took the lead back with a try from Cuan Hablutzel and the conversion meant the lead was now 23-14.
As the norm in this game UWC scored an 5-pointer immediately which gave them a 1 point lead.
UCT got another try through Brink which gave them the lead again and the win with 32-24.
