Ashley-Cooper starts for Waratahs


The Waratahs will open their Super Rugby campaign against the Hurricanes at home on Saturday.

At first glance the experience midfield pair stands out in Karmichael Hunt and Adam Ashley-Cooper. They will start against the Canes on Saturday.

That leaves Beale out of the match-day squad for round 1. Although Beale is fit and ready to go coach Gibson opted to ease him back into the frame.

Israel Folau will start at the back which brings so much to the team with Foley back at the important number 10 jumper.

Hooper will captain the side from the number seven jumper with Dempsey and Hanigan along side him.

On the bench, Lachlan Swinton will make his Super Rugby debut off the bench, while props Rory O’Connor and Chris Talakai will also make their debuts.

Waratahs: Israel Folau, Alex Newsome, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Karmichael Hunt, Curtis Rona, Bernard Foley, Jake Gordon, Jack Dempsey, Michael Hooper (c), Ned Hanigan, Rob Simmons, Jed Holloway, Sekope Kepu, Damien Fitzpatrcik, Harry Johnson-Holmes.

Replacements: Tolu Latu, Rory O’Connor, Chris Talakai, Lachlan Swinton, Will Miller, Mitch Short, Mack Mason, Cam Clark.
