Match Report – Lions win try-fest at Emirates Park


It was a try-fest at Emirates Airline Park which saw 13 tries scored but at the end it was the Lions that came out winners with 47-39.

It was an interesting first half which the Lions dominated for most of the 40 minutes. They laid down the marker in demolishing the Jaguares scrum from the start.

With penalty after penalty the Lions quickly found them in the Jaguares red zone but twice could not get the drive over the line.

Eventually it was Rhyno Herbst long arms that stretches over the try line for their first and the early lead in the game. The Jaguares came back with a penalty to make it 7-3 for the Lions.

The Lions kept the pressure on and gave the ball enough air to cause the Jaguares a lot of problems.

Elton Jantjies was next to get over for the Lions and stretch the lead to 14-3 and in a good position. The Jaguares is not known as a team to give up and they hit back with a try of their own by Ramiro Moyano.

With the Jaguares on attack the ball was turned over and the ball went through the hands for Kwagga to sprint down the line and score in the corner.

The Lions again turned the ball over and this time Wandisile Simelane shows off his speed sprinting down the line to score his first Super Rugby try.

This gave the Lions a 26-8 lead with just minutes left in the half.

The Jaguares had the last say in the half with a cross kick that Wandisile Simelane gather and stretches over in the corner.

The Lions could not asked better start to the second half as they scored two quick tries from Courtnall Skosan and Marnus Schoeman to take their lead to 40-13 totally dominating the game.

The Lions took not long to get over the line again Skosan scoring his second of the match. The Jaguares got the next one from another great drive from the lineout to make the scoreboard 47-20.

The Jaguares came with a late surge and scored three tries to make the scoreboard a bit more respectable.

It was a little to late but the did prevent the Lions from getting a bonus points at the end as the match ended 47-39.
