Match Report – Lions grind it out against Chiefs for the win

It was a game of two halves when the Lions beat the Chiefs 23-17 on Friday.

They were clinical in that first forty minutes but let the home side back into the game in the second. It almost looked like Whiteley men was running out of legs as the Chiefs speed up the game in that last twenty minutes.

At the end they were good enough to hold on and take a much needed away win.

The Lions came out firing but a mistake on attack almost cost them with the Chiefs running down the field.

Only a desperate tackle by Lombard stop them from scoring the first try. The Lion early on looked like they gonna run the ball on the day, getting back to the game they have played for the past three season.

It was the Lions with the first points on the board when Jantjies kicked over a penalty for a 3-0 lead.

The Lions had the better of the first 30 minutes but handling errors kept them from crossing the Chiefs line.

With Lombard at ten and Jantjies at twelve the Lions had something extra on attack.

With the Lions keeping the pressure on the Chiefs in their half they got another scrum penalty which the Lions kicked for an attacking lineout.

From the lineout the Lions worked hard to get Sadie over for the first try of the Lions and the match.

The Lions was not done and their captain Whiteley, got the ball out n the wing and put a small grabber through which Aphiwe Dyantyi finished off just before halftime.

This gave the Lions a well earned 20-0 lead at the break.

The Lions had a good start in the second half as well, playing in the Chiefs half of the field. They had some opportunities but good defence from the Chiefs led to mistakes on attack.

The Lions showcase their defensive systems in the the next ten minutes keeping the Chiefs out from their line.

There was some ordinary mistakes coming form both sides but it was the Lions in control.

The Chiefs then came back into the game when their captain on the day, Brad Weber broke from the scrum to send Sean Wainui over.

The Chiefs was back over the line straight from the kickoff to make it 20-10 bringing the straight back into this.

The Lions started to slow down the game which played in the Chiefs hands. This gave them much more ball to play from and something they did not get in that first half.

The Chiefs got their third try to close things up to 20-17 with two minutes to go.

It was frantic stuff at the end with the Lions that turned over the ball with Schoeman which resulted in a drop goal by Jantjies on a penalty advantage.

This gave the Lions a 23-17 lead with seconds to go.

They were able to keep the ball from the restart and take the win against the Chiefs.

Warren Whiteley had a huge impact in his return to the side not just as player but as captain as well.
