Match Report – Waratahs squeeze past Rebels

The Waratahs had to comeback from behind at home to get one over the Rebels on Saturday when the beat them 23-20.

The Rebels build up a nice 13 point lead at the break but poor discipline cost them.

The dominated the first half leading 20-7. The fact that the Waratahs came back does not mean it was by any means an exciting game.

There was just too many handling errors by both sides which makes this a stop start match throughout.

When both side did manage to put the ball through the backline with no handling errors, they were able to score point but that was wide and far apart.

The first try only came in the 17th minute of the match when Karmichael Hunt throwing a superb long pass to skip three of his teammates and find an unmarked Jed Holloway, who drew in the lone defender before offloading to an unmarked Adam Ashley-Cooper to go over for the games first try.

The Rebels answered back seven minutes later with a scrappy try

The we had to sit through another 15 minutes of mistake on mistake before Hodge went over

Luckily for the Waratahs the Rebels poor game got even worst in the second half but it took them a good 10 minutes to get there second try.

The match was sloppy in the first half, but the Rebels performance in the second was downright diabolical.

The 20-13 lead was then wipe out 8 minutes later when the Rebels overthrew a lineout ball allowing Foley to swing round the back of the lineout, pick up the ball and shot through a backline to even the scoreboard at 20-all.

Foley added a penalty in the 64th minute to give the Waratahs the lead which they manage to keep till the end.

Both side will be looking at this game and know, it is just not good enough but the Waratahs will take the win.
