It was the Hurricanes in the first and the Rebels in the second half but at the end the home side got the win 29-19.
The Hurricanes showed their hand immediately spreading the ball wide and came up centimetres from scoring a try in the first minute of the game.
The Rebels had the first opportunity to put points on the board with a penalty but Hodge missed from halfway before the Hurricanes got their first try through Ngani Laumape who powered over.

They troubled the scoreboard again when Beauden Barrett found space and scored the home side second try for the lead of 14-0.
There third try came after some phases from the forwards before the ball went out for Goosen to go over the corner.
The Rebels defensive structures were falling apart as the Hurricanes was founding space everywhere as Vaea Fifita got over for their forth try.
This gave them a 26-0 lead.
The Rebels had some good time on the Hurricanes line and was maybe unlucky not getting a penalty try but some desperate defence from the Hurricanes kept them out.
The Hurricanes came close for another try before halftime but Savea lost the ball over the line which took the teams into the break with the home side leading 26-0.
The second half saw the Rebels working hard in the Hurricanes twenty two and finally got rewarded in the 53 minute of the match when Philip got over.
The Rebels stayed in the Hurricanes half of the field with the home side forced to defend for long periods of time.
Sustain pressure by the Rebels was rewarded with another try by Billy Meakes for the Rebels to reduce the lead to 26-14.
The Rebels kept the fightback going when they got their third try of the match to reduce the score further to only 26-19.
The Hurricanes then got a penalty which Jordie Barrett slotted over to extend the lead by three points to 29-19.
With 2 minutes left the Rebels got a penalty straight in front but Cooper missed it.
That was that really with the Hurricanes keeping the ball until the final whistle.
