SA Rugby U21 Championship – Blue Bulls and Cheetahs with big wins


It is only week 3 of this years U21 Championship but the Blue Bulls have already shown that they will be hard to beat in this years competition.

Here is this weeks summary:

After beating Province 55-27 and Free State 73-31 the Blue Bulls registered another huge win this time over the Golden Lions.

It was a 59-5 win for the men from Pretoria in round 3 of this years U20 championship as they have a five point lead on the log already.

Scoring nine tries to the one of the Golden Lions just show how dominate this Blue Bulls side was yet again in this match.

Wian Van Niekerk went on to score two tries with the rest coming from Dewald Maritz, Werner Fourie, Mornay Smith, Ewart Potgieter, Keagan Johannes, Cabous Eloff and Theo Boshoff who scored a try and six conversions in the match.

The Golden Lions only try came from Dameon Venter.

Western Province has also suffered another defeat this weekend from the Sharks when they went down 36-22 in their match.

The Sharks are no lying second on the log five points behind the Blue Bulls.

Even though Province outscored the Sharks with four tries to three the men from Durban can thank the boot of Adam Mountfort who got two conversions over a drop goal and three penalties.

Mounfort also got over the whitewash with Thaakir Abrahams and Jaden Hendrikse.

For Province Schalk Erasmus, Quan Eymann, Angelo Davids and Abner Van Reenen scored tries with Van Reenen getting a conversion over as well.

The Free State Cheetahs registered their first win of the season when they beat the Leopards 45-18 on Saturday.

Coming off heavy losses against the Golden Lions(54-33) and Blue Bulls(73-31) it was good to see the men from Bloemfontein put in a better performance.

Scoring sevens tries to two was just what they needed to get their campaign back on track.

The Free State tries came from Philppus Johannes Krugell, Lubabalo Dobela, Ruhann Greyling  and Cohen Enrique Jasper who scored four tries on his own.

Both the Leopards tries came from Heinrich Botha with two penalties from Andre Van Der Berg and a conversion from Janlu Steenkamp.
